Big Sky to stop East Coast opps

I haven't posted here in a while, but it looks like I'll be around more now that I'm looking for a job...

Word from mgmnt is that the Western operation is closing as well, including all the EAS routes that were recently re-awarded. This could happen as early as February.

The pilot group has been asked to continue working through Jan 8th in the East, which is the date that my employment is "permanently terminated."

I seriously doubt those with job offers elsewhere will bother to stick around.

I'll post more info when I have time. Shawn, thanks for the kind words, I'll call you this week.

CommutAir maybe???

Eh, some of BigSky's beeches are commutair birds....The NXXXCA ones. If they take them back, maybe. Otherwise they seem to be liking the dash 8 and the CLE flying. From what I heard Gulfstream is even opening a CLE base when Commutair finishes off their 1900s. The street CA at BigSky I know was a Commutair FO that went to BigSky when the BOS base closed. Its a possibility that BOS could reopen as a CommutAir base. I'd doubt it though, CommutAir was (maybe still is) headquartered in PBG. I was suprised when they gave up the EAS route out of their hometown.

For any Big Sky pilots out there, if you've got your 1000 PIC already, then AirTran is actively hiring and will be at the AirInc fair in DFW next month. We hire lots of Beech drivers, so give it a shot.

AR-
I shot you an email too. Definately thinking of you, let me know if there is anything I can do for you to help. I was talking to a Hawker operator right near your house that I can get you the chief pilots contact info for, they will hire around 1000TT they told me and I am pretty sure I can get someone to walk your app in or at least drop your name.

Im still in Toronto, my checkride is tomorrow and loft on Friday but after that Ill be home so we will be in touch (my cell is too expensive to use up here with intl roaming) but shoot me an email.

Good luck big sky guys, im pulling for you all

DL has been talking about losing 5 of the 10 connection carriers. One down...4 to go.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Thats what management has been saying around here. Delta is trying to streamline their DCI operation. Skywest/ASA, and Comair are probably not going anywhere. Everything else is up in the air. My guess is Mesa's next to get the axe.

Comair? Not sure about that. DAL already axed some flight there. 8 aircraft lost in '08 which will not be replaced.

ASA? The worst performing DCI carrier out there statistically also had block hours reduced.

SkyWest? Again, already saw a reduction in block hours for DAL.

Mesa? They just are a sad operation and I feel for the good folks that work there.

I don't think Delta had a hand in it.

Wasn't Big Sky's Delta Connection operation "At Risk"? Just like Colgan's US Airways. The mainline partner has no say in frequency or prices.

I would not count on comair being there. There are growing number here who think we will be gone by the end of 2008.

Yeah, this was actually making money (and providing feed) for Delta. There was almost no costs to them. I think Big Sky was always in a very tight financial position and they just couldn't make money in the North East, which is much more unforgiving on operations then the west. If the stories about the west ops shutting down in the future are true, I wonder if that is because of the capital they sunk into the Boston ops or because they just can't operate with gas being as high as it is?

Big Sky was a money loser even when they were only a western operation. They haven't made money for MAIR since the day they were purchased. Foley held on to them just as a whipsaw threat to Mesaba pilots, and it worked wonderfully. Now that Mesaba isn't owned by MAIR and Big Sky can't pull its own weight, Big Sky is no use to MAIR, and Foley is probably ready to just fold up MAIR and distribute money to the shareholders so he can take his 7-figure position at NWA licking Steenland's boots.

Everyone says we'll be gone soon....we'll be gone soon.....

blah blah blah

WE ARE STILL HERE, sometimes for better or for worse

Till its down on paper, and they change my uniform wings.....thats when i'll believe it.

My condolences to the Big Sky guys that this closure effects. You guys seemed like a good operation (at least what I have heard about)- and I would have enjoyed the chance to DH (or fly) on the 1900 sometime, who knows....still have a few trips to go.....maybe it will happen.

As bad as MAG is doing on the UAX side, the freedom certificate seems to be doing ok with the DAL flying. The JFK base is expanding surprisingly. Not quickly by any means, but expanding nonetheless.

At least thats the info that I see currently.

Damn! Best of luck to the Big Sky pilots. This makes me wonder though - how is Colgan making any money with the 1900 in the Northeast? I can't even count how many cancellations we had this month and flying 5-6 legs a day I haven't even seen 19 Pax COMBINED on our routes. Hmmm...

This is just going off of what they told us in basic indoc so may be true, may be slightly inflated. But I was told that when Delta sold us (ASA) they signed a new long term contract that would cost them about as much as they sold us for to get out of. Then again, I'm sure there is some provision about not meeting goals and being able to get out of a contract...who knows.

DAL can still reduce bllock hours which they did recently and ultimately means reduced flying and that's exactly what they did to ASA recently.

I don't know, Comair has a huge operation for Delta and is owned by Delta. I doubt Delta will cut off their own foot.

Delta reduced almost everybody's block. Not anything noticeable though. We're not going anywhere because Skywest signed a 15 year deal with Delta when they bought ASA that ASA must operate at least 80% of DCI operations out of ATL.

SkyWest? Again, already saw a reduction in block hours for DAL.
Skywest saved Delta from going completely under when they bought us according to our management. I have a really hard time seeing Skywest go away from DCI

Mesa? They just are a sad operation and I feel for the good folks that work there.
Prime candidate to be axed. Not sure how long their contract is though. Think it ends in '09

And if Delta merges with NW then things will probably get REAL interesting. I think if fuel prices stay the way they are there will be major consolidation in the industry.
