Being told to call ATC, after landing

I've been the one to give the number to someone once over our company freq, and there was this puppy-dog shame in their response... "Oh....okay....roger."

...It was just the third shifter's cellphone number

Actually had a Citrus B717 come out of the alley @ MSP one day and cut us off on D, after we cleared 12L. We were parking signature.

Tower told us right on D h/s 12R @ D, monitor ground xxx.xx

So AirTran apparently gets taxi clearance out of the alley as we're on D and cuts us off abruptly.

When queried about our clearance and instructions compared to those with Citrus, captain happy throws a fit. Ground admits it was a communication "glitch" between the tower and ground and apologizes. Captain happy however isn't satisfied and proceeds to tell us on his taxi to 17 that "if you have a problem with it you can call my chief pilot at xxx-xxx-xxxx.

So of course we tell ground to mark the tapes, and 3 days later they're sent to CP @ Citrus for review.

Apologies were forthcoming. We never blamed the 717 crew. ATC dropped the ball here. Captain happy got overzealous.

Moral of story: Not always a good idea to give out the number, lest you end up with egg on face.

I feel like someone needs to create a flowchart for the chain of command, down from the FAA all the way down to the PIC of a given commercial aircraft. Id imagine it would be mighty interesting to see how it all actually connects and falls into place.

"Theres always a bigger fish" said a wise Jedi.

Oh do I have stories. The time an LCC demanded my number and the next two centers to boot for ending up behind a medivac.

The one where someone taxied and took off without clearance at a delta, busted bravo, got the magic deviation words shut off their transponder busted another delta and landed at a charlie.

Most of us just want to ensure you know you messed up, how to prevent it in the future and leave it at that. I don't even know Brasher phraseology.

Ive actually been told of that trick....not in any way like "well if you know you screwed the pooch, turn of your trans and drop as low as you can", but that someone has done that (no one I know)....to me thats like getting pulled over for speeding, then deciding to initiate a chase....sure you have a chance you will get away, but seriously?.....

Yeah, that turned what was going to be just have her call so we can remind her we have an operating tower into something much, much worse. I mean that was going to literally be the end of it. This is flat country too. I can still see your primary 90 out.

Challenge accepted ;)....just kidding.
Flown one too many a time NoE in my sims hehe

Also, the most ostracized I've ever seen someone was the guy who asked a manager who HAD to report a deviation on a playback to run a tape. The pilot thought he said x, he said y, readback y. No loss at all. Clean operation. FSDO notified but the pilot still flies around thank God.

He is hated by everyone who worked with him for that single act. Fortunately he's on a rock out in the Pacific.

Yea it freaked me out to hear him call "check altitude" on final. I looked over and expected to see minus 200 or something but was revlieved to see such a little error. Then again getting the window 100% accurate isnt the easiest with tiny ticks spaced two apart so who knows. Alls well that ends well. :)

MYF is where im based so I know just how much fun that place can be, especially since 28L is still out. CRQ is a bit dicier just because they have much faster traffic it seems....although I do enjoy getting that little cessna up to "best speed" for them :) SEE i personally hate just because of the taxiways (and the base turn that points you dead at the hill), RNM is always fun just because if the controllers irritated it sounds like they are yelling at you from the bathroom.

All in all its training so every new challenge is a learning opportunity right?

Ahh, the infamous check altitude. That also has to do with the descent rate they see you at, so you can get that sometimes without busting any minimums.

Who are you flying with at MYF? I've spent plenty of time around there.

Yes, he probably triggered a Minimum Safe Altitude Warning (MSAW alarm), which considers descent rates. Our ATC Mode C displays don't show values below hundreds.

ATP now. Before them I did my private at SDFTI.

Ahh thats probably what I did then, because I do recall descending a bit steeper then I should have before i started getting bucked a bit.

Nuisance alarms were common at some places I've worked when the aircraft was diving and driving on a non precision approach.

The last time I got a phone number to call, the chief pilot was flying as my FO. So we were both perplexed to get the phone number.

After calling, the NTSB wanted to get a hold of me because our crew and flight became a material witness to an aircraft accident that happened about 10 minutes after we departed an airport on a flight that was 7 legs earlier during our duty day.
The FAA had been looking around for us all day to get a hold of us to talk and they finally caught up to us after we landed and were deplaning passengers. So after talking with them, I'm now in the NTSB accident database.

Jeez. I never got that. Was it something that in the long run of things was really worth blowing a gasket over?

I got the number only once for having quite an argument on the radio with the ground controller at IAH. In the end the supervisor apologized to me for the conduct of the controller. The story is too long to type but anyone on the radio that day got quite an ear full!

I was told to call the tower back when I was puttering around Texas in my 150. One evening I landed to pick up a date, called TKI ground and got nothing. Tried a few more times on every published frequency and then opted to make calls as if the were closed and took off. After the camping trip concluded I flew her back to TKI and was told to call the tower. Apparently I had failed to make any calls and the controller ripped me for 10 minutes on the phone. He had the exact same things happen 5 times in the previous two weeks with other student pilots. I politely informed him that I was filing a NASA report and he got really aggressive. At that point I said 6 times was a pattern and the common denominator wasn't me and ended the call.

That afternoon I prepared to leave and called ground....no answer. Called ground...No answer....No answer. After the third time I taxied over to directly in front of the tower and turned on my strobes as well as my landing & taxi lights and called ground again...This time there was a quick answer and an apology because "I was getting coffee." I asked if I should put that in my NASA report and he got really super nice...And I left.
