Having a kid at 19 seems like the result of poor decision making, perhaps aviation is not your strong suit.
Wow, how mature of you.
Regardless of the negative statements... I am graduating from Rocky Mountain College this weekend. Bummed to see you aren't attending, as it's a good place to fly, go to school, and nice place to raise a family. I'm 21, single, and from the Bay Area...so I am not a fan of Montana....but there's a lot of good qualities here that are extremely positive in my opinion.
Seems like you're on the right track but I do agree with
@xargos .... you should care about your education. That was my motivation to get through college....the classes aren't tough and you don't have to be super intelligent as people think college graduates are....you just need to motivate yourself and push through the rough times. I came into Rocky with my private from the 61 world and am graduating in just 3 years with my BS in Aeronautical Science.
LOTS of pros to Rocky... small campus, EASY to get ANY class you want (because we're a private small school), professors are awesome...willing to meet on their own time to help you if you are struggling (in any field from english to aviation)...I actually have professors phone numbers to give them a call or text for questions or to meet at a coffee shop to read over papers and etc.
As far as the aviation department, we have ABBI accreditation, decent size fleet with Archer III's, Bonanza E33C, and Baron B55...a decent amount of instructors...Bridge program with Skywest cadet pilot program and also Cape Air (which flies out of Billings around Montana)...also upon graduation you'll qualify for the rATP rule to get hired for 1000 hours. Downfall is the weather and sometimes poor instructor availability but my senior year has been a lot better. They're improving the flight ops a lot since I came in as a freshman. We are expanding with a minor (possible major) in dispatching, aviation management degrees, and also just got approved for a minor in UAS if you're interested in that....or you can degree in anything non aviation related for that matter (like some people suggest)...although I loved my degree in Aeronautical Science...some awesome classes like CRM, air carrier ops, safety, etc. For costs...you're really gonna spend this type of money at any University...specially out of state tuition...unless you do your ratings elsewhere. Rocky will provide you with great financial aid and you can take summer classes here (which I did for 3 years and that's how I skipped a whole year)...I'm graduating with $90,000 in loans and that's for tuition, room and board, and Instrument, Commercial, Multi, and CFI included.
As far as cost of living it's incredibly cheap out here. Gas is low, no sales tax, my rent is $500 for a 2 bedroom basement all utilities included and the job market out here is extremely easy compared to big cities. Lots of connections through our program director.
Anyways, regardless of if you've made your mind up on Rocky or not I encourage you to get a degree. I can answer any other questions about our school and program. I was unhappy here in the beginning but it was a culture change for me. Looking back, it was a great small school where I learned a lot and I was extremely happy I chose Rocky over the big name schools like Riddle, UND, SIU, Western Michigan, who all accepted me and gave me absolute GARBAGE financial aid. Rocky gives out lots of money here and Billings is a nice cheap affordable town to be in. I got a job as a Ramp Agent with Delta...made more money than most of my regional pilots at Skywest flying into here make a year, and still attended school full time. Hope it works out but my only other advice is RESEARCH. Do the math, see if you and the family can financially support this career. Thankfully it was easy for me and I'm young like you but you have a lot of responsibilities and make sure she's on board also. I know plenty of people at Rocky who have kids and etc. and make it work fine so just make sure to brief everything. The costs are gonna be the same realistically anywhere you go, but I'd get a degree....plus when you're a senior like me you'll look back and feel so accomplished. I mean who wouldn't feel accomplished to pay $160,000 for a piece of paper.....
