Beaver Restoration

As much as I'd like to keep ground based navigation for backup... That's true of every ils receiver ever made. A car drives by the airport and you get a wild glideslope swing.

It's interesting watching our radar tracks when the controller requests us to do the ILS instead of an LPV approach, constant S-turns down the localizer.

There's not a whole lot of controlled airports without an ILS. The only LPVs I think I've ever shot have been into class E or G airports.
I agree with you, but LPV approaches are becoming more and more popular with 91/135 guys. Hell, just the other day we flew an LPV into FWA.

Dan,
Can't wait to see what you make of it. Beavers... special place in my heart for them...

I'm bidding on a non-waas GNS 430. I don't need precision approach beyond an ILS. If I need the 200' difference in cloud ceiling/ 1/2 mile in vis... I'd need to reevaluate why I'm going.

If it’s SE piston I’m perfectly happy sitting on the ground if it’s IFR. I had plenty of specials in and out of BET, and I wasn’t even there long.

@Dan208B, how about an update.

Wish I had a lot to tell you! A lot of time recently put into remodeling an 80x60 hangar for this project and storing other airplanes I’m involved in. Finishing up insulation, heat, and carpeting. Found an R985 off a Beech 18 in need of an overhaul. Just had that shipped here. I’ve spent a lot of time flying and driving to talk to the nice folks at Sealand Aviation and Kenmore Air about STCs and parts. Also found a mechanic to do some part time aluminum skin work that I’m afraid of messing up myself. Saw a set of Edo amphibs on barnstormers for $100k. Don’t have that much cash on hand with everything else I’ve had to buy. That’s ok, I wanted wiplines anyways. That’s about it for now. I’ll get some pictures this week. Thanks for checking!

Beaver Update:

Finally sorted through everything. Have lots of duplicate parts and missing some parts. Working actively on trades and locating what I need. Here's some pictures of the reskinned fuselage. Have it in a nice hangar to assemble now. Next step is Alaska Door mod.

I've been doing a lot of aircraft stuff, mx, upgrades and such recently and it's just crazy how it adds up. I cannot fathom a DHC-2 restoration.

The short answer is not good. Everyone asks me what the timeline is and my new answer is that it's self-limiting based on costs along the way. I'm hoping not more than 5 years but tough to tell.

I'm hoping to have pics of the new project by next spring... that is have the project delivered by then. Cannot wait to spend every spare dime I have on it to make it fly.
A heroine addiction, 5 stints in rehab and relapses would be cheaper.

What are you buying?

Wow! Like R^2 said, that looks gorgeous!
Hangar looks really nice too! What kind of floor covering is that?
