Beards...what gives?!

However, an improper fit will allow more O2 to leak and thus depleting it at a faster rate. Not to mention the escaping air is going to keep the VOX open and give you a horrendous noise in your headset/speakers. Also, if it is leaking, the air diverted to the smoke goggles will be reduced.

All very good points.

Personally I think that a beard appears less professional than clean shaven.

So are other "professionals" less professional because they have a beard?? But what if I offset it with a fancy hat? Nothing says "I should be regarded like a Doctor more than a hat."

I'm guessing this is fact because of some well known study or test?? Obviously it's not significant enough of a factor because the rest of the world doesn't buy your arguement. How many airplanes have been crashed over the past fifty years due to pilot error vs ox mask failure due to beard??

The wife won't kiss me if I haven't shaven in a few days, so all girls definately don't dig beards. I do enjoy not shaving sometimes when I'm not working, but my personal opinion is that guys look more professional clean shaven.

How you dress, shave, not shave, shine your shoes, etc has ZERO to do with how you fly an airplane. I've flown an airplane in jeans and a t-shirt, and I've flown a plane in a shirt and tie, and the end result was the same thing.

We might as well let homosexuals serve openly in the military then...:sarcasm:

How many times did the crew need to use oxygen because of smoke/fumes where they had a beard?

Sooooo....I'm guessing you made a personal study of "the whole world" to know the rest of the world disagrees?

Do you honestly not believe that a leaky mask uses O2 at faster rate?
Do you also not believe that emer (pressure breathing) with a hot mic activated is incredibly loud?

I had a beard in the military, and was wearing a mask everyday when flying at altitude (also never had a problem with the ABC mask) never saw any difference then when I started service and didn`t had a beard.

Same type of mask as civilians use?

But you couldn't possibly be aware of whether or not it was leaking a bit with the beard, because it's usually not a factor.

We got tested, I`m sure it can leak but it met the standards back then....

The other test, with the ABC mask was pretty funny, you sit in this room and you have to tell the guy if you smell bananas...

Was the ABC mask the one that you were referring to in the example?

Well, consider this: There are extremely toxic fumes in the cockpit. Small amounts will irritate your eyes enough so you cannot open them, and breathing even minute quantities will lead to immediate and irreversible neurological damage. Do you want to have the mask on over a beard still? If so, is that a responsible decision for those that you are responsible for?

Alright gentlemen the facebook page has been created. Pictures and quotes have been used from this thread. Who knows maybe it can change.

Look up pilots for beards or here is a link.

Long live facial hair! ;)

Nice. Done. :D

Actually, I shaved my goatee off during the Christmas travel rush because I knew I'd have to sit in the jumpseat on a carrier that doesn't allow them... :(

I figure in this day and age these things shouldn't matter anymore. Soon enough our generation will be the ones at the top dictating policies. Might as well start voicing our opinions early.

with a positive pressure mask it over floods the mask and keeps toxins out. I used those in the fire department, but we did not have beards....
