Aviation schedules

Well if the whole JAL thing works out, I'm thinking NYC 7ER Captain or at least SLC A320 Captain.

BCTAv8r -

Here's my last 60 days and next 30. It's 'regional' airline. No vacation used during this period, just the normal schedule. I can't complain about this part of my job at the moment. Living in base certainly helps.

Instructor at a Small Part 61/141 (vast majority 61) School

It was entirely possible to set my own hours. Very flexible. Almost too flexible. The more you work the more you get paid. When I was instructing as much as possible several years ago I would hope to start teaching around 9 or 10am (earlier by prior arrangement) and finish anywhere from 5pm to 8pm. It varied widely. Some days I would teach 2 to 3 hour blocks all day, put 2-4 instructional hours in an airplane, other days not so much. Night flights as necessary. I would probably fly 6 out of every 7 days most weeks.

Part 91 Cargo (Cessna Caravan)

The route would run every night. In my heyday I would fly the route 3 to 4 times a week. The boxes would arrive around 6 to 6:30pm. Six legs, 6.5 to 7.5 hours of block time and return home at 2:30 or later. Sometimes I would instruct in the afternoon prior to leaving. Definitely the most consistent schedule I ever had.

Part 135 On-Demand/Air Ambulance/Lifeguard (Citations)

I'm "available" to fly. A lot. Obviously we don't go over a 14 hour duty day, or 10 hours block in any 24 hour period but the sky is the limit. Most of our flights are 4 to 6 hours from startup to shutdown at homebase. Some are shorter, some are longer. Sometimes we'll put no more than 1.5-2 hours of block time for a 9 hour trip, other times we'll be gone to Puerto Rico all day for a 7 to 8 hour block day. Sometimes we go down to pick up a box in Ft. Lauderdale and turn around and come back. It varies widely. I can get time off when I need it. Extended time off for vacation requires approval but is always granted. I'm also usually in my bed every night (or day ;)).

One day when I'm older I'll have a more consistent schedule. Maybe...

Survey Pilot for an Aerial Survey Company.

Showed up for work November 1st. I'll get to go home at some point in May. Missed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and, whatever else is to come! Part of the business I guess!

Eh, mine's easy. 5 on, 2 off. 10 days off total in the month (except this month when they extended me into my day off, making it 6 on, 2 off and 9 days off total).

That sounds like mine except we do 5-2-5-3-5-2-5-3.

That and we are "overstaffed" so it's kind of hard for them to justify juniormans right now... although they are trying.

And yes... criminal is a nice word for it. Personally I prefer ###### up.

I sit reserve at DAL 95% of my months here... I live in base. Minimum of 12 days off... you default to long call, which is a 12 hour minimum callout. Usually you know around 18 hours in advance. Around 1% of my callouts have been right at the 12 hour mark.

I typically get off my keester and go to work around 8 days a month- around 40 hours of flying. Up to 6 days a month of short call (gentleman's 2 hour callout), although I've never been escalated to that more than 5 times.

All in all... very laid back. It's funny watching a scheduling department that knows how to staff as opposed to Pinnacle who will put someone back on home reserve and just junior assign someone for a trip. How that makes any financial sense for them, I don't know.

About 4 days gone followed by 3 days home. Lather, rinse, repeat.
It averages out to about 280ish hours time away from base a month. Which equals aprox 3300 a year. I made aprox 50k at my regional last year, it works out to about 15 bucks an hour. Commuting at the regional level is highly hazardous to your serenity and should be avoided.

Kinda sounds like my schedule in the summer. 5 on, 2 off, 12-14 hour days. But 'home' every night so I guess that counts for something.

Line Service Tech

I've worked two line service jobs, and a combination of four schedules.

First Job:

Sunday: 8-5

Saturday and Sunday: 9-5

Second Job (and current):

Thursday: 7-3
Friday: 7-3
Saturday: 7-7
Sunday: 7-7

Should be noted that I often didn't get off till 12-2AM the next morning on both Sat and Sun, and sometimes had to stay over into Monday before 7.

Current schedule:

Friday: 11-7
Saturday: 11-7
Sunday: 11-7

February:

Friday: 8-4
Saturday: 12-8
Sunday: 8-4

I like my new and current schedule. All will change in March, I fear.

I was frankly expecting a lot of airline pilots to post and was surprised at the diversity of jobs represented here. We usually talk a lot about wages and not much about the other factors that comprise QOL, so it's good to have such info. Thanks for all the replies.

Bid for more hours and evenings and got outbid at the last minute.. Yay seniority. It's hell on trying to have a social life on Friday and Saturday nights when you've gotta be in bed by 9:30 to even get a shot at some decent sleep.
