Autonomous aircraft washing/de-icing building

ChasenSFO

hen teaser

The company claims this will cut de-ice times down to a consistent 5 minutes per aircraft, and the system will be ready for delivery to customers this time next year. Looks like Norway will get it first.

I once had tower call and ask if we needed assistance due to the black soot clouds rolling out of the deice truck heater. Pretty sure that truck was older than the airplane and airline put together.

My personal favorite is the scissor lift deice "truck" in SJC.
I did a walk around one morning in SJC to something dripping on me, reached up and there was a solid sheet of ice on the wing.
"Hey, we deiced you."
"Uhh, well you're going to have to do it again..."

I saw the deicer pull around. Some weird contraption hooked up to the tow-hitch of a Chevy pickup.

XNA had what looked like a lifeguard tower bolted to a trailer they pulled around with a golf cart.

Also had a morning in BHM where all 5 deice trucks at the airport broke and the two they sent up from Huntsville broke down on the highway. Everybody pushed back out of the shade of the terminal and then waited for the sun to melt the ice.

I’ve needed a deice truck in SoCal before. That was an interesting morning.

My personal favorite is JAN, they have an old timey hand pump cart that is essentially worthless, but they ocassionally try.

Got “deiced” in SBA one morning. They legit had a bug sprayer and had to hand pump it.

From personal experience, at least the scenery in SBA is a little better than staring at the weird puke green terminal in JAN at 5:30 in the morning.

You ever pick up a plane in the Kilo pad at HPN at 5am in January? I'll take the old side (east I think?) Of JAN over that any day. Sigh... memories.

I never have, I started in 2014 and I guess they were done with it, the taxi line on FLICA is still there for originators though... as for memories, maybe one day it will be that for me as well.
