Aussies on US Carriers

Yes, there are Aussies. Not many but I have met a few. My best pal is an Aussie who is a CFI now and is trying to get interviews at the regionals.

Yes, foreigners are employed and yes you need that green card to be employed.

Yanks? She uses that term too. I told her to go to the south and call the Americans there "Yanks" and see what kind of reaction she gets! "Yankees" were considered from the northern states and some southerners might be highly offended even today.....

Different terms & words. Took me a few weeks before we finally got to understanding each other.
 
Aussie, you don't need a greencard to be employed straight away...but you will need a working visa which you'll have to extend every few years until you get your greencard. To get that working visa you'll have to be employed by a U.S company who hasn't been able to find anyone for the position that they had to advertise for at least 6 months. Not 100% sure but I unfortunately doubt any airlines would go to the great expense of hiring foreigners at the moment with the loads of thousands on the streets. It can be an expensive journey over here. I've heard of people who have spent 6 figures plus over years of trying to get there greencards only to be told to get out of the country and go home..But then again I also have some friends who moved here in Jan 2002 and they got their greencards in August of that year...In a way it is a 50/50 thing......it all depends on the mood of the person who says the "yes" or "no" to allowing you to stay here.

Marrying an American would work also, but it's still a pain up the butt process to go through. I think if you ever divorced her you'd have to leave the country.

When I was in Melbourne I was going to fly out of Essendon - however I never got around to flying. I was too busy riding horses in Werribbee!
 
Which Uni are you at in Melb?? UoM, Monarch? I used to live on the corner of Flinder and Williams. Melb was awesome - I spent 6 months there.

im living in Sydney, and fly out of Bankstown airport. I havent flown into Moorabin or Essendon.

So your from Melb i take it?

I've flown from Moorabbin to Essendon and back with a guy I knew. I've also flown out Morrabbin several times to the training areas, plus once with the MMM traffic plane and once on a around the bay pipeline inspection.
 
That's unreal. Actually go to Swinburne in Hawthorn and then fly out of MMB two days a week - pretty unreal course - but a lot of work. Melbourne's a great city - lots to do and good flight training environment.
 
Hum, do you know Simon Lewit by any chance? I think he's doing his last year of his aviation management course there.
 
On the note of Autopilots,
for all the airline pilots out there,
when do you engage the Autopilot after takeoff? How soon i mean? After 1000ft or a certain speed?
