Atlas buys Southern Air

Do our Southern Air brethren consider this good news? I'm no ACMI expert, but seems like Atlas is considered a much better outfit to work for than Southern based on what I read and hear.

It's too early to tell if this is good or bad for anyone who wears a pilot uniform. I think it's good for Atlas in that it provides quick access to 737 and 777 fleet types which are probably growth markets in the freighter world.

I'm not yet certain if this transaction knocks Atlas pilots out of section 6 negotiations and into another arbitrated contract. I'm sure there are plenty of conspiracy theorists who will say that's exactly why the whole thing was orchestrated. The transaction potentially takes a strike, unlikely as it probably was all along, off the table just as Atlas Air Teamsters were beginning contract negotiations (many were/are not happy with the contract that resulted from the Atlas/Polar merger, which was never voted on by the pilot group, it was agreed to between the union and company with certain sections arbitrated).

Well said. Far too early to start guessing how it'll go. My concerns are two-fold, however:

1) Will Southern be merged with Atlas Air, Inc. pilots, or will they be operated as a subsidiary of Atlas Air Worldwide like Titan?

2) Will this result in another contract amalgamation?

Time will tell.

How'd you like to be the last 737 F/O to have driven out of CVG with his middle finger extended?

1) Will Southern be merged with Atlas Air, Inc. pilots

This is, of course, the key question, at least for the Southern guys. I find it hard to believe that Atlas would keep the current garbage contract at Southern, if for no other reason than pilot attrition/training costs.

One of the most junior guys there is a buddy of mine who completed training back in early December. He has since been waiting to go through IOE. He had to take a job at a retail store during the holidays to subsidize his income a bit until he gets a call to go fly. There's really been no sign of him getting a call anytime soon

No different on this side.

Did you take a job as a Walmart greeter? :)

I heard they're going to integrate the seniority lists and then outsource the 737's to a regional because Atlas doesn't want to fly "those little airplanes."

They're all clapped-out -400s, right? What life do they have left, if they get dumped now?

Ameristar perhaps? Everts?
