Atlas buys Southern Air

In which case it's a trailer.
Southwest would do well in Australia.

I tuned into SYD tower last night:
SYD: Qantas 123 stay with me to the gate and keep that speed if you'd like but we just needed you to speed up off of the runway".
QF: "Yeah then we'll keep the speed up thanks"
SYD: "yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!".

Hopefully this leads to great opportunities for you and everyone else here who started at Atlas. Even the ginger colored ones.

What I was conveying, and some got it, is that the 737 isn't the career boost its used to be.
Southern's 737 < (almost all) RJ's. The QOL there is horrendous.

Dont confuse AA , UA, AS DL etc... 737's

Unless you want to be an expat, of course.

@ChasenSFO , I know not everyone has my fantastic career goals, but that is quite masochistic in order to get a 73 job overseas.
Opportunities. The same way guys put up with crap jobs to get to the regionals or the life at a place like Great Lakes to move on to a better carrier, if a guy or gal wants to move to China and sees a realistic opportunity for a 737 type they wouldn't have otherwise at this stage in their career, I'm sure many would take it.

QOL is more important than pay to me honestly, so this would not be my cup of tea either. But I get why people do it.

I think it's all relative. Sure the pay as a Delta 737 FO is better than a Copa FO, but wide body pay and QOL is gonna be better at the legacies. Especially the 717. That is 100% regional flying. I totally agree that it isn't the career boost it used to be. Mainly because regional aircraft have bridged the gap I think. An E175 is every bit as much an airliner as a 737.

The Beech 99 was the original Airliner!
@Boris Badenov

Well said. Far too early to start guessing how it'll go. My concerns are two-fold, however:

1) Will Southern be merged with Atlas Air, Inc. pilots, or will they be operated as a subsidiary of Atlas Air Worldwide like Titan?

2) Will this result in another contract amalgamation?

Time will tell.
They specifically mentioned in the webcast that there will be a seniority list integration down the line. Congrats to the southern guys. See kids. DUIs don't matter.

How senior is their pilot group? This is no different than the impending FlexJet/Flight Options. Flops has a much senior pilot group. I guess it pays to take the lower paying job sometimes...

I worked for a crap airline for 73 time and because the upgrade was relatively quick only to go to China. Not really for the money but because I have been to China a couple times and living over there intrigued me. I jerked gear for a year and just couldn't take it anymore.

Yeah I think quite often the exploring expat dream turns out to become exponentially less exciting as one's chronological age goes up. This has certainly been the case for me, and I never even worked up the gumption (or the connections) to do it.

Exactly. I have gotten emails from companies like Fly Dubai, Copa, Spring...

Fly Dubai wont leave me alone. They call me like a mortgage refinance telemarketer. Just a few years ago I would have jumped at the chance to go there and eventually get on with Emirates. Not really interested anymore.

I just got a new job in the states that I am real excited about that does the type of flying and schedule that I want. Actually, I think you work there too...
