ATC manager pay scale?

Is it true that managers make more pay than ATCs on the floor? And if so, why?

I would say yes, and the reason being, and I know this makes no sense, is because they are the managers. I know at most jobs managers make less then the people below them, but ATC is crazy!

Not sure what the range is, but I'll post pay ranges for terminal training (OKC), Front Line Manager/Supervisor (LV Tower - lvl7) and front Line Manager (ZAU - lvl12)

Air Traffic Control Specialist (Terminal-Instructor) From 91,781.00 to 119,314.00 USD per year

Supervisory Air Traffic Control Specialist Operations Supervisor (Front Line Manager) From 136,119.00 to 172,200.00 USD per year

Front Line Manager(ZAU ARTCC) From 155,530.00 to 172,200.00 USD per year

It looks like the salaries vary quite a bit and are dependant on the facility level just like an ATC. I can't tell from the postings though if locality is or is not included in those ranges.

You can go check the job postings on faa.gov and choose 'I am a Fedaral Employee" then I just typed in Traffic Manager in the search field.

Yes, please show me some legitimate examples of where the workers make more than the bosses.

EXAMPLE:
Most waiters work off of tips and make around 2.50/hour. Lets say on avg a waiter works 3 tables per hour and makes $5.00 in tips from EACH table [plus the 2.50 for the hour]. It equals $17.50/hour. Now multiply that by 40 hours a week...It equals $700/week. There are 52 weeks in a year, so your looking at $36,400/year.

This is probably about what someone at a avg restaurant (ie Red Lobster) would get paid per year as a Manager. Keep in mind some of the waiters are going to make MORE than this because of their hard work ethic and their way with people.

yes the managers make more. for doing less, no less. managers main job is managing the break list. if that's a $140K/year job then sign me up.

the MSS wages on the pay scale is the manager scale. go figure.

many union shops have workers making more than their (non-union) managers

i see it at my current job

"united we bargain, divided we beg"

i'm willing to bet that some of the computer scientist kind of guys make much much more than a manager upstairs that needs an assistant to tell him how to use microsoft windows. this is probably still far and few between. managers in general (all jobs in the US workforce) makes more than the laborers. that's just the way it is. i would say that some if not most of these managers do way less than the laborers and make way more.

We can all cite examples, however the statement was that in "most jobs" the worker makes more than the boss and that I highly disagree with. If that were true, nobody would ever climb the ladder and seek more responsibility. As for atc, talking base pay, the flm's and managers make more but at many facilities the top line controllers end up making more than their boss when nights, sundays and OT is added in (please nobody mention save pay, it affects only a small few and doesn't represent the whole). THAT makes atc unique.

on the new scale it's not really that way though. especially with phlegms keeping their CIP. i know there was talk about that going away. anyone know if they are indeed taking away the sups CIP.

Right, with the new pay scale most of the younger line controllers are not making more than the flm's/mgrs. There is still talk of taking away the cip for flms but it hasn't been put into effect as far as I know.

I think that whether a manager makes more or not depends completely on the job.

My dad was manager for years at his employment (he stepped down after 2 major heart attacks in 5 months). He was not the top played employee. The men (and woman) that were over sales made a LOT more money due to commission than my dad did. My dad kept the job cause he HATED doing sales.

I know of other people that remain as managers not because they make more or have less stress but because they like to have the power to tell people what to do and such. Whether a manager makes more than others depends completely on where the manager is located.

As for a manager making more on the floor than another ATC...yeah I think they should! They work the floor and many times have other responsibilities. I have a friend that is an ATC at ZLC. He will be retiring in the next year. He was a manager for a while and after a while gave it up. While he enjoyed some of the perks of being a manager, he found he was working the same hours as many of the others and making less money than them...plus he had to deal with all the downfall crap. He gave up the manager position and went back to the floor and has been much happier ever since! He was saying that they were finding young, inexperienced atc's were the only ones wanting and willing to take the higher positions. He was very frustrated with the situation but said that the position held too much stress and not enough compensation.
