ATA discontinues all operations

A real shame. Our company did a lot of business with ATA and they were a great airline with great people. It's the cancellation of their military service contract that did it. Now they have to return their planes immediately to the leasing company.

Don't forget as well, Skyway is going out of business on Saturday and Sun Country is going to furlough 45 guys or so.

ATA, our "Hometown Airline"......

I wonder what the local news here will have to say about it. :(

My sympathies to the rank & file. May better doors open soon for you.

Maybe not this much, but Sun Country normally trims there schedule this time of year. All the snow birds start to love the weather here in Minny and don't have the desire to escape as much.

They have also been given their return date (October) when the snow bird escape begins again.

If anything this is a REALLY bad sign for what's to come. We now have 2 airlines who entered Chapter 11 and failed to arrange DIP funding.

No doubt it's very sad. It's been a rocky road for ATA for a few years now.

The fact of the matter is there is still a large amount of over capacity, I just didn't think it would be going away like this, but rather with a major either tanking or merging down.

I still think we will see that, but there are certainly a decreasing number of seats in the market.

But wait Starting in May for a small sacrifice of a $60,000 of debt you can enter the airline industry in 90 days by going to ATP!!!:sarcasm:

What is this, Sept. 11th all over again? Where the airlines have to shut down. Makes you really think about the country and how it is ran.

For the sake of all pilots and future pilots I hope that the right adjustments will be made to price of airfare as well as capacity here in the states. The fact is there is enough demand out there for every airline to make money. I have not been on a flight in recent memory that wasn't full to the brim. Market adjustments will need to be made regardless of fuel price. Passengers will always neet to be able to go from point A to Point B. Although the outlook in Airline costs are bleek I think that eventually they will be Forced to raise ticket prices. I mean EVERY airline can't go out of business right?

That sucks. My first A&P job was at a MRO facility that did overhauls on ATA's 727. At the time they were our best customer. All of the ATA maintenance reps where good people and easy to deal with. Many of my coworkers hired on directly with ATA and went to work in Indy. This was around 1996-1997 making them fairly junior. So I suspect most of them were already on furlough or had moved on.
