AS hiring heads up

Within the next 1-2 weeks, Alaska should be posting dispatcher positions on their careers website. Just received word of the hiring approval for 4 dispatchers to start this fall. Keep your eyes out for it if you're interested.

Cheers!
Great. Does anyone know when United and/or American may be posting next?

We *should* be hiring right now at AA. We could use many more desks open to reduce the workload. Also, OT is plentiful and on rare occasions a desk or two gets closed on a shift due to staffing when they cant find anyone for OT. However, I wouldnt expect hiring until 2018 or 2019 unless the Feds force a workload reduction or the L-US side cant handle the increased workload next year.

I would hope for sooner

Day AA opens their doors, those W/O'd regionals will start looking like this:

"Sign here please. Here's your badge."

Hiring page calls them "Dispatcher" still, right? Nothing fancy-like?

Seriously??

EVERYONE in this office should be raising holy hell about the workload. It has nothing to do with LUS "handling" the workload. If I wanted to be a clerk instead of a dispatcher, then sure I could put out a boat load of releases. On the other hand I don't feel that the quality of my work should suffer because management can't pull their heads out of their you-know-whats.

All management cares about is if the releases are going out and flights are operating. They dont care about quality of work. Our side has been putting out releases for a long time at this workload. If your side starts doing the same, all that management will care is that releases are going out and flights are operating.

In terms of hiring new dispatchers, if releases keep going out at the L-AA rate next year then there wont be any new hiring next year.

Yeah, it may say Reserve Dispatcher, but same difference. Same pay, same work.

Word, thanks.

Mainline has a history of hiring from Envoy. If I worked for the other two, I wouldn't get my hopes up.
Hope? Ha, summer child.

See, one thing this industry does to even the finest of workers - your hope and self-esteem are swiftly beaten into hatred and self-loathing. :)

Alaska top of scale = $63.13 / hour, plus "Performance Based Pay" bonus program with a target payout of 5% of eligible annual earning (actual payout has been around 9% last several years), plus small fuel incentive bonus.

Chief / ATC / Training positions pay 110% of the hourly rate.

Line holders can bid either 4-on/ 4-off 10 hour shifts or 5-on 3-off / 5-on 3-off / 5-on 4-off -8.5 hour shifts

Plentiful OT / double time shifts available the last few years, but that may subside a bit after this class is out of training.

I thought we DIDN'T do this job for the money. Holy.

Going to Alaska for dispatchers not currently at a major could be a very good gamble to take. Alaska is already announcing that they will be eliminating duplicate positions if the acquisition of VX is approved by the Feds. It stands to reason that they would probably do the same for operations control centers.

I imagine that once they achieve a single operating certificate that management will want all the flying to be dispatched from the same location and work group for the purpose of efficiency.

VX dispatchers as of now are not union. There has not been anything said about what will happen to the VX dispatchers should the SFO center close but if it does, I imagine that they wont be getting DOH seniority on the AS list. Likely will be stapled if they are even offered jobs with AS.

So getting hired now is a good time to get hired by AS. It is likely that within a few years, you could have a bunch of people underneath you just from the merging of the two companies. Thats also not taking in account other hiring AS may need to do.

Compared to other mergers though, there wont be a need for a JCBA as there is no need to merge two different contracts into one. You may not get legacy or WN pay at AS and SEA may be higher cost than DFW or ATL but your seniority will likely be excellent in a few short years and AS is a good company to work for.

The caveat to this is if the AS union feels sorry for the non union VX dispatchers and does offer them DOH then you could be stuck at the bottom of a long list for a long time.
