Are cargo khakis acceptable at the Academy?

Number 1 = Dress code sucks. FFAA says it erodes the public confidence. Last week they tried to rescind them in exchange for us not going out and destroying them in front of Congress.

Number 2 = Worry about something important. Like whether you are going to make it at your facility. (BTW I wear cargo pants EVERY day to work. when you work at someplace like A80, manglement leaves you alone. We have other things to worry about besides pants. Like controlling 4000 aircraft per day).

I've noticed at NCT that not everyone wears nice pants with a tucked-in shirt. On Friday I saw a guy wearing a track/exercise outfit. There is always people wearing polos and when they do, they aren't tucked in. Even when people wear full button-up shirts, sometimes they aren't tucked in.

Like you said, maybe it's just these really busy places that aren't too strict about it.

Yeah it would be nice to wear my shorts, polo shirt and Doc's every day at the Academy. On the other hand wearing slacks and a polo shirt beats wearing a suit everyday. When I was working for Enterprise Rent a Car as a Management Trainee, I had to wash cars in 100 degree weather while wearing a suit.

I am sure how strict the code is depends on management. One facility I was at the ATCS were wearing Hawiian shirts. :rawk:

Also, there was some studies done that showed that dress codes improved work performance. I do not think this applies to ATC. Due to the fact that excellence is expected every time you work. Anything less is unacceptable.

Yeah, we've got people wearing the Hawaiian shirts too.

OK COMFORTABLE IS ONE THING SO I UNDERSTAND THE LADIES IN SHOES BUT COME ON.. THERE NO SAYING 3 PIECE SUIT OF SOMETHING JUS LOOK LIKE YOU WORK FOR THE GOVERNMENT.. NEAT A COLOR AND PRESSED SLACKS...

ME PERSONALLY ID RATHER BE NAKED :nana2:

Yeah, we've got people wearing the Hawaiian shirts too.
One of the places I worked, management told a guy wearing Hawaiian shirts that he couldn't be promoted until he started wearing a tie. For the next few weeks, he wore a tie with his Hawaiian shirts. :) Eventually they must have compromised. He got promoted, and stopped wearing the Hawaiian shirts.

What about kilts? Does it specify anywhere that you're not allowed to wear kilts? Think I read somewhere that a bunch of controllers wore kilts to protest the current dress-code standards...

sell out!!

I would just like to make a very important note.

I'm not complaining as much as I wanted to double check before I spent any money on clothes that I would not wear outside of work if they were deemed unacceptable.

I've worked construction and in a warehouse since I was 16, so I've never owned more than one pair of nice pants. Everything else is jeans, t-shirts, and shorts.

Has anyone that's currently at the academy chimed in about the cargos?

I know things have changed out there quite a bit.

I know I'll have a lot of shopping (or a lot of laundry) if I make it as far as the academy. Anyone wanna buy 10 - 15 pairs of extra tall male scrubs??

Maybe somebody already answered this, I don't know, I didn't feel like reading through all the posts. I wear cargo pants most days at the academy and have never had anybody say anything. Some people in training walk around with wrinkly polo shirts not even tucked in and are never disciplined, so if you present yourself in a clean, neat and professional manner I don't think anyone will have a problem with your cargo pants. Facilities vary from one to another, my facility manager told me he has absolutely no problem with cargo pants.

Again, dress code is a minor issue, and I would be just as happy to be paid on the Green Book pay scale and come to work with the dress code, though I wouldn't mind getting my cake and eating it too lol. Minor issue!? I don't think something is minor when it provokes idiots into wearing dresses, kilts, leisure suits and tacky button up shirts to work. The management are sticklers about this because of rebellious attitudesSo me wearing a military uniform controlling traffic didn't make sense? A little different considering military personnel have always worn a uniform, so your rules have been there since like the beginning of time (not to be taken literally) and ours is only two almost three years old, what's changed to warrent this?Long time coming. Since before the new rules (IWR and draconinan are union terms) that was one of the biggest demands of managers. They were tired of seeing people show up to work in track suits, flip flops, wearing hats, etc. We are going to work for the federal government and should dress the part. What other federal employees wear sweat pants, and flip flops to work? When you find it let me know. Well, besides IWRs. No one ever saw me control traffic while I was wearing it; so should I have worn it all those years? Women don't have to wear high heels to look professional. NO they don't, I never said that, I said it depends on how the management is feeling that day Thanks to the idiots mentioned above who taunt them When you are busy, you won't think twice about what you are wearing. I know from what little experience I have. Some people need to grow up and learn that rules is rules When they're Imposed Work Rules I don't see them as valid rules, not saying that I'm going to be a rebellious controller and wear something like say a kilt to work (yes this actually happened) I'll follow the rules, doesn't mean I'm going to be happy about it, I am quite a grumpy gills (or so my father tells me)

You sound like management ... calling controllers who stood up for their rights idiots ? Maybe those idiots should not give you a second of OJT... Controllers are the only ones who a dress code was implemented on. Office personnel, staff specialists, AF, etc. all still wear jeans. Go into any Gov't office, state, local, or federal... jeans are worn by all. The dress code was done to break the spirit of the controllers and the union, that is the only reason.

Where do you get your info ? Biggest demand by managers ? Managers were wearing jeans as well, they got screwed in this as well. If management would have read the green book they easily could have enforced dress code violations if they were really concerned... the green book had/has a dress code. You sound like my manager... no clue what is going on in the real world.

FYI ... draconian was first used by Maid Marion to describe the green book, get your facts straight. As for IWR ... they are imposed work rules. Not one person in the membership was given the opportunity to vote on them, hence they were IMPOSED. The FAA came to the table and never negotiated one thing... it's what we adults call bad faith bargaining.
