Apple iPad as EFB

I have access to download Jepps in PFD format. I'm going to do a trip file on the iPad when it comes out and download the charts for each trip. I'll continue to carry my paper charts, but going to see how this will look on the iPad.

It is hard, but aGPS is land based cellular tower assistance of acquiring the GPS signal, it still has GPS, its just assisted by the GPS signal in the cellular tower. So I have many times used it in the flight levels just for the heck of it, its very hard to get a signal and lets face it what the hell need do I have for an iPhone GPS at 25,000 feet when I have an Avidyne in front of me lol.

Wrong. The iPad does not have a GPS, and there is no GPS signal buried in a celluar signal. Good luck using it for any "GPS" like tasks while airborne.

I'm with you here on this one... though with apps, you get what you pay for really... No one really wants to see what plates looks like on a 3" screen so no one has developed anything for it yet.

Good point. I hadn't really thought of it that way, but you're absolutely right.

Kinda went over this in the last thread about the iPad...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-GPS

AGPS is not GPS... it is land based... ever try to get a signal at 15,000 ft? It's a little hard if not impossible to do!

Ahhh! THAT'S why I can't ever get a good signal in the air. I had no idea. Thanks for pointing this out... it was frustrating to not understanding why there was such a drastic change in functionality.

Get the iPad in the bright sunlight, and guess what? You can't read it.

How do you know? If it is like the iphone it can be read in any sunlight. I leave my brightness setting, off of auto so it cannot change, and about 40 percent of the way up. I have no issues reading it even on the brightest of days.

Comparing kindle to ipad is kind of like comparing the fisher price color splash to your home desktop PC. Ok, maybe that is just a little harsh, but I think you get the point.

Not being able to multitask adds to the stability to the software...

:yeahthat: To others, have you ever opened an app on an iPhone? How long does it take? For me, foreflight opens in under 5 seconds every time. That is the largest app I have, the others open in 1-2 seconds. (This is a 3gs I am referring to.)

The processing power of the ipad is faster than the 3gs, using the A4 chip instead of the A3.

...if I turn off the GPS and the wireless on the tablet, I get 7-ish hours of battery. With the GPS/wireless, I get around 4.5 (it's actually closer to 5.5, but I turn it on when we preflight, so it sits idle for an hour just sucking battery power away). Still waaaaaaay longer than bladder capacity. Available now.

What happens when you drop that stylus?

Kindle is half the price

It is also about 1/10 the device the IPad is.

I was looking at upgrading to the P1630 and getting the SSD option, but have heard mixed reviews of the SSDs on the market. What have you been hearing?

SSD drives are good and bad. You will pay significantly more for a good one. The problem with the SSD are the chips have a finite lifespan and the drive has to use load leveling (for lack of the proper techie term) to make sure all the chips are getting written to periodically so you don't wear some out prematurely and lose capacity.

Didn't know, wasn't trying to be a smart ass. I see a lot of screens that don't work well without the stylus.

Me either. And to be honest, I'm not even sure this one works with the stylus. Works great with a finger tip though. :D

I guess I should try the stylus out...but I'm afraid if I take it out I'll either lose it or not be able to get it back in.

I'm sure Apple is aware of the potential for the iPad to be used as an EFB as well as many other professional uses.. Things are about to get really interesting for people that develop for the iPhone and iPad

It's kinda funny you mention that... on my Macbook Pro manual it states that "this device was not developed for use for use in air traffic control, nuclear energy installations, or any safety sensitive areas." Or something like that. But they could be their way of CYA.

The iPhone has a GPS chip to acquire the signal. The iPad does not.

Nobody knows that yet. Half of the specs haven't even been released. Though I would suspect the 3G model will include a GPS as it is essentially a 10 inch screen cell phone.

Well I don't know, neither does he. Here are some conflicting results from equally useless sources:

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=5898 ... "So, to clarify, the 3G model has GPS and the Wi-Fi model doesn’t have GPS."

http://gps.about.com/b/2010/01/27/apples-new-499-ipad-gps-maps-navigation-features.htm ... "Built- in GPS chip and accelerometer."

Until apple says one way or another it is speculation. So unless you have a news release from apple, you are guessing. Just like all of these wonderful people in these links.

Let me just say I hope I'm wrong and that it does have true GPS capability. If we get georeferenced approach plates and GPS, I'm in.
