Anything larger than a cell phone now banned for Carryon?

Rumors are swirling that the TSA is getting ready to issue a ban on any electronics larger than a cell phone as a carry on. Apparently this ban means no Ipads as well. Anyone officially gotten wind of this yet?

Message for U.S. Citizens: Aviation Security Enhancement

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), in consultation with relevant Departments and Agencies, has determined it is prudent to enhance security, to include airport security procedures for passengers at certain last point of departure airports to the United States. These enhancements include more stringent measures applied to 10 specific airports, to include Dubai International Airport (DXB).

The enhancement in security will require that all personal electronic devices (PEDs) larger than a cell phone or smart phone be placed in checked baggage. Approved medical devices may be brought into the cabin after additional screening.

Airlines were notified on March 21 at 08:00 EDT. They have 96 hours within which to comply. For more information on these security enhancements, please contact your air carrier or visit the Department of Homeland Security website.

I also find it interesting that it's now okay to mandate high-energy lithium ion batteries go into cargo holds by forcing laptops into checked baggage. Up until this week there was a push against doing this. I can just imagine the argument on this one: Safety or security. You cannot have both.

I'd love to see a comparison of the probability of a lithium battery fire versus a terrorist event involving a lithium battery equipped device.

Given today's news, it seems like something powered by plain old gasoline does more damage, more easily.

Makes my life pretty damn inconvenient and I'm POSITIVE I'll be having to buy a new laptop pretty much every time I fly back from overseas on Qatar & Emirates...after all, it's all about me.

Two words.... Pelican Case.

They could airdrop the bag to whatever arriving airport you were going to and it would survive.

Backed over one with the rescue when I was working EMS and the damn thing stayed pretty much intact minus one of the latches. They are definitely a solid investment

We've been transitioning all the Camera equipment storage/shipping cases because we hit that point where the boxes weren't more expensive than the stuff inside them.

It's easy to scoff at the price of them and go with an off brand that's cheaper, but seeing a collection of tough/hard case brands over a decade in the military take the abuse we put them through I can say without a doubt that money is more than just a name you are buying.

Accept no substitutes.

(Waits patiently for the PM on where to send royalty payments).

I don't know I've seen some Air Force airdrops that could kill a pelican case.

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

However I own 6 pelican deployment cases. Even United would have a hard time damaging a Pelican.

Although......

But don't worry

Just read an article where Emirates plans to collect all PEDs just prior to door closing, place them in the cargo bin, and then return them upon arriving at the gate.

That's a little surprising. I'd have expected them to be stopped at security for passengers traveling on those flights, ensuring that it was obvious to everyone how worthless the measure was. This way only makes it obvious to everyone on the flight.

Remember, almost all of their passengers are traveling through Dubai, not originating there.

Not sure it makes a difference. PEDs will still be pulled from bags mid flight, resulting in rage from those who handed them in.

While I agree that over-all this is stupid, after receiving some SSI at work...I get why they're doing it. In theory(not really in practice, however), it does make sense. But the way the gub'mnt is going about it is still beyond silly. Very much needs some refining, or the whole thing is useless. It has nothing to do with the ME3 vs US3. Though I don't think a UA or DL flight is at any less risk than an EK or EY flight..making the whole thing stupid.
