Any runners round here?

I'm not, in fact I hate it. But I'm trying to get back in shape and have decided to participate in the Lost Lakes Run. It is 16 miles long, 10 miles up a mountain then 6 miles down the other side. The race is August 16th. I've been slowly building up my time and mileage. My best run was Saturday.

Any advice and accountability is appreciated! Trying to do this the smart way and not hurt myself.

Running changed my life. I cut 25+ lbs, and nearly 4" at my waist. One of my favorite ways to explore a new overnight, and at worst I can always find a dreadmill at a hotel. Don't skimp on cheap shoes, and change them out by 400 miles.
I got a quality pair of shoes and it went from my knees hurting to my muscles being sore. Big difference. Feels like a new muscle group is sore every time I add time to my run.

Yup. It's about building your base. Don't neglect cross training / core exercises (I've been terrible about that lately). Your knees are stability joints, a lot of knee pain can be initially attributed to weak hips / core.

Here are some things that have helped me:
  • Make friends on your Running App of Choice and post the results on whatever Social Media you use. Seeing others succeed will encourage you.
  • I like having multiple pairs of running shoes and rotating between them.
  • Pick several routes around your home and alternate; it's even better if they're different - hills, flats, scenery, etc.
  • Run on layovers - as others have said it's a great way to learn a new location AND kill time

Well since you guys are my favorite form of social media...

Looks like my last run wasn't a fluke. Though I did take two days of because of commuting.

Take it very easy in the beginning. It's easy to push too hard and end up with an injury that will sideline you for weeks. If you keep at it long enough, at some point it won't suck as much as you'll actually look forward to your runs..kinda.

I've been slowly adding distance and time. Probably go on a shorter run tonight.

Finally beat my 20 min/three mile goal (<6:40 pace) at the end of December!

I normally run 2-3x a week, but since it's winter I've been hitting the treadmill mostly. Some days I get to venture outside and log it.

Nice! I'm trying to get to sub 20 5K this spring. Right now I'm doing 8:30 to 8:50 miles to build a base.

Start hitting the treadmill. You need a pace you can set and increase over time. Set the incline to +1.5* to better approximate running outdoors. I do it in the morning prior to eating breakfast. 5km = 3.10 miles.

This is what I do over the cold reason as an example.

Last year it was:
Walk 3.0 mph for 3 mins, 0.15 mile (warm up)
Run 8.0 mph for 2.80 miles, 2.95 total distance
Run 10.0 mph for 0.35 miles, 3.30 total distance (3.15 miles at running pace)
Jog 6.0 mph, for 0.40 miles cool down, for 3.70 total distance
Walk 3.0 mph for 3:00 mins.

Stretch, 40 pushups.

Make sure you are strength training your legs on your off days as well as your upper body. I do squats and lunges only for leg work, don't over do it though.

This year I'm doing
Walk 3.0 mph for 3 mins, 0.15 mile
Run 9.0 mph for 2.80 miles, 2.95 total distance
Run 11.0 mph for 0.35 miles, 3.30 total distance (3.15 miles at running pace)
Jog 6.0 mph, for 0.40 miles cool down, for 3.70 total distance
Walk 3.0 mph for 3:00 mins.

Stretch, 60 pushups.

Should be around 30 mins. Good luck. It's a lot of work. Keep breathing, the last sprint is pretty tough.

I hit my goal of a sub-40 minute 5 mile and have barely run since. That was almost 2 years ago. I really need to get back into it but after being in Florida for 6 years it's so hard to run in the winter in NY. If anyone wants to add me on Nike running to shame me into doing it again I'm all for it. Search for XxATCxX

I've been slacking. It's icy outside and I'm being a wuss. I ran a couple days ago and it wasn't that good of a pace. Heading to Bethel next week, not sure how I'll incorporate exercise.
