Any LDS (Mormon) Pilots out there??

I would disagree with this post. I am involved with corporate aviation on the side right now and you never know when you are going to be gone. You are on call most of the time and when the phone rings, wether at 3am or 3pm, you go. With an airline you will be gone a lot at first but you do know when you are gone and when you will be home. As you get more seniority you will be able to pick your own schedule, being home when you need to be and being gone when you can. You also can opt to fly less as your seniority goes up so you are home more days out of the week. I am getting married in May '09 and this has been a big issue with my fiance and I as well. Best of luck to you man. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.:rawk:

All the corporate guys I know have pretty unpredictable schedules. ZAPBRANNIGAN in the boards here may have a different experience because he works for the largest retailer in the world, so they may have a bigger fleet and more predictability. Not sure a typical corporate job would be better than an airline once some seniority is held.

There has been some great advise in regards to being LDS and being a pilot. While also being LDS I decided not to further my career in flying but my decision had nothing to do with religion.

Like Newty, Leed, and others of non LDS faiths who are Sunday going folk you wont make it to church every week until you have the seniority to do it. It will take some time. You know what? Doug is right! If you were to be a doctor, lawyer, or any other involved profession you are going to miss church and family activities. Its just part of being in a busy profession. Ask fiveo, he's a cop, how many Sunday nights or days he has missed or any other person of a busy profession.

The thing is many of us LDS folk grow up being around family etc. We had fathers who chose professions that kept them home. If you want to be a pilot bottom line is you will miss Sundays. If you want to be of any profession worth doing you will miss Sundays, not always but at the beginning yes.

Just one more point I want to make to Q400. As far as spending time with family goes, IMHO there is a HUGE difference between time spent and quality time spent. A 9-5 job typically brings fathers home in the evening, tired, kids are doing homework, it's can be hard to spend much quality time with the family. Now sure pilots are gone alot but they are home alot too. And when we are home it is usually for a few days in a row which means that I fix breakfast for my kids, take one to school and spend the day with the younger one. My quality time with my kids is better than it has ever been. Are you going to miss a birthday or two? Sure. So spend the next day off the entire day with the birthday kid. Miss Christmas? Sure. So have it a day or two before or after. Some adjustments will have to be made but they CAN be made. I have to agree though that it takes a wonderful woman to make the whole thing work. If she has to be (or you have to be) attached at the hip then you had better become real estate agents or independently wealthy. (if you figure out how to become independently wealthy please let me know!)
