Any Jet USA guys?

Doug, please forgive me, but I'm gonna mention flightinfo.com...

There are a number of USA Jet pilots over there, including the outspoken pilotyip. I believe there is some fairly current info on the cargo forum there.
However, it sounds like wheelsup may able to help you out so you can stay here at JC. :)

yes yes that one.

fly dc9s

Ok, here's the rundown -

They are a DA-20 (Falcon 20) and DC-9 Cargo and pax charter op. The newhires go into the DA-20. You are on a 20 MINUTE callout. Yes, you read that correctly. If you don't get to the airport within 20 minutes you DON'T GET PAID for that trip (even if you end up flying). You get 10 days off a month, and for 20 days you are on a 20 minute callout. You can "sell" your days off at $XXX (I don't know what the amount is) to be on call those days.

Pay is a min salary (like guarantee) and mileage based when on trips (if I remember correctly). Something like $0.10 per mile or whatever it is. I believe he was making around $2700 or something per month base salary. He flew about 50 hours in 6 months - hence why he quit and came to a regional (to fly and build time).

The "transition" to the DC-9 is around 15 months (when he left). That is to the FO seat, not as a CA. Upgrade to the left seat in the DA-20 WAS 2 years, I don't know what the upgrade in the -9 was (he never mentioned it) but I presume fairly long.

The DA-20's are freight, the DC-9's are freight and pax. They do a lot of charter for the US auto industry (which is why they are based in detriot). He told me lots of stories about "bribes" and such down in mexico. Some of the stories were scary (like deathly scary from the places he was at). I guess you get used to it though. Imagine getting a call at 3AM, waking up, getting a shower, putting on clothes, shaving, brushing teeth, etc. and out the door in 15 minutes for the 5 minute drive to the airport. If you can do that, you could work there. I know I couldn't...

All you need is Sergeant Williams' Crash-course in fast morning prep!:)

Easy....shower before bed, sleep in clothes, brush teeth and shave on the way to the apt. Done....Even have a few minutes to grab some coffee. :D

btw Lloyd, how come you're not out celebrating your irish heritage? :D:sarcasm:

I can't believe that's legal. Gotta be against some labor law. Could you confirm that for me?

I have a hard time believing that. Unless it was last year when they were really fat on pilots and things were unusually slow. Generally this kind of flying runs pilots right up against the yearly maximums. Also, upgrades would almost certainly be quicker at JUSA than most any regional.

Oh, I can imagine. Been there done it. I'd like to hear some of these "stories" though.

I think your friend was talking himself out of it by making it sound worse than it is. The pay figure looks low, and upgrade times in the Falcon have been known to be quicker. If I wanted to move back east and fly this kind of freight (and go back on a pager), USA Jet would probably be my first choice. It is probably one of the better on-demand cargo operators to work for. It's not for the faint of heart or the regional wannabe crowd, though, that is for sure.

They made it illeagal for dominoz pizza drivers to make the 30 min guarantee, but not for pilots..hmmm

At my regional, if I miss my callout on reserve I will be removed from the trip, without pay. Nothing illegal about it.

And eatsleep, as far as pay/QOL/flying, that's the way it was. He left because he had NOWHERE near the mins (and when he went there he had 2600TT, 600+ multi, previous freight dog) to upgrade in the DA-20 because he wasn't flying, and at the rate he was going he wouldn't of upgraded for a long time. He liked the gig, we was getting paid to sit at home, but he couldn't have a life for 20 days.

They can't make you fly and not pay you. That's what I'm saying. Not the same as missing a reserve callout. What if you had a one hour call but still made the flight? Would you expect to get paid or could they make you fly for free because you didn't make your callout?

i'm about 2 shiner bocks away from googling da-20 to figure out what the hell it is.

there are always usajet dc9s out at gky (i got to land and take off behind one ... coooool)

shiner sundayyy

"da-20 to figure out what the hell it is"

It's a little tiny jet plane, otherwise known as a Falcon, or Falcon Jet, or Falcon 10 or 20. They were built in France, which is a surprise considereing how long they have lasted.

Little known fact, Fedex got started with a handful of Falcon 20's with cargo doors. It's an urban legend that things were so bad at one time that the pilots paid for the gas with their credit cards to keep it going. I bet the Falcon's with cargo doors at USA jet used to be the Fedex birds. Kinda doubt USA jet will turn into the next Fedex, though.

ran out of shiner before i could google. im familiar with falcons! wellp if im ever bored up at kgky i'll tick down the tailnumbers on those dc9s and google them when im shinering it and see what i get.

in other news, i always used to watch airborne express 767s land at love field, and i looked at apc's pay scales and they show that abx has the best payrates out of any airline. I just this instant put together that abx= airborneXpress.

BRILLIANT!

I see what you are saying. That's what he told me. Could have been exaggerating, however. If he would get back to me we would all know the truth :).

DA-20

DAssualt-10/20

I believe Fed-Ex used the Falcon 50 when they started out, I don't know if they still use them or not, I would think they don't.
