Texas plane crash exposes gap in US air security

It's a big gap," said R. William Johnstone, an aviation security consultant and former staff member of the commission that investigated the Sept. 11 attacks. "It wouldn't take much, even a minor incident involving two simultaneously attacking planes, to inflict enough damage to set off alarm bells and do some serious harm to the economy and national psyche."

The suburban Georgetown Municipal Airport that pilot Joe Stack entered hours before his airborne attack in nearby Austin had the casual atmosphere of a sleepy parking garage. Pilots were not subject to baggage checks, metal detector scans or pat-downs. And they are usually not required to file flight plans.

Did anyone on here think THIS wouldn't happen? The first thing I thought of when I saw that building and heard it was a Piper was not "oh crap the sky is falling with home grown terrorists.." but, "how is the government going to make my weekend 172 rental a PAIN IN THE A**"

Ugh.

At least someone in the article gets it....
Walsh and other general aviation advocates argue that stringent security and bureaucracy would deter recreational fliers and slow down a vibrant, multibillion-dollar general aviation industry, causing economic damage.

What could have been done to prevent this from occuring?

Other than completely banning all non-commericial flying, nothing.

What would a flight plan have done? Had them calling up later when he didn't arrive at his destination?

Someday the US is going to have to realize that not everything is preventable.

Edit: Perfect, I figured it out. We need to create high powered lasers that will be mandatory on all buildings over a certain height, to shoot down incoming planes. I figure we can do it for about $5 trillion.

Reading the article I found it to be more or less balanced and anti-hysterical. I like that they drew parallels to hoping on a motorcycle. Present it something regular Joes do on a weekend and GA is a little more palatable to the average person.

He could have walked in the building with explosives packed under his clothes & accomplished the same thing.

Better ban clothes! Wait...

Now we're talking.

OK that sounds like an invitation for all the People of WalMart to come out to the airport to be seen.
As a result we'd need profiling to make sure everybody else doesn't go blind, and someone would be offended that they need to wear clothes, and ........

I understand reasonable security measures.. but Jesus, when did we become so wimpy? An asteroid could come slamming into us at any minute, so why not enjoy yourselves and stop worrying so much?

What?! An asteroid??? Obviously we should set a congressional committee to investigate means of an asteroid defense system and the methods for paying for it. This should be our top priority for national AND global Security.

I wouldn't be too worried about it. GA provides too much industry in this country, especially right now for anything to happen.

O.K. everyone hold on a second. I need to get back on my feet. When my knee jerked, I fell over.

I say ban ALL GA flying. After all, everyone who fly's a small airplane must be crazy, and is capible of flying an airplane into a building. Seems like all the little airplane pilots are just nutz anyways. Flying little tin cans reminecent of them crazy Wright brothers!

:sarcasm:

Out of all the consultants out there is this country its to be expected at least one of them would make a statement like this. It's their jobs to do so. Probably no reason to panic just yet.

Even if they decide to do something what are they gonna do? Spend millions if not billions to put a TSA office in every single airstrip in the country.
