And so it begins... XJT stole SKYW's flying

The UAL flying was for about 30 50-seaters for about 3 years, Skywest did not want to waste their time with that flying. They would have had to buy 30 or so planes and hire for those planes only to have to deal with the headache in 3 years of what to do with them.

Look for skywest to focus more on the Q400s and larger crjs. The 50-seater is a thing of the past and is below skywest.

A subcontractor not wanting to "waste their time" pursuing subcontract work?

Do you really believe this?!

When did SKYW get a base in Georgetown, Guyana?

How about XJT flying ORD-DLH, got everything together, word came out in the paper about it, and next thing you know SkyWest and United came and took it.

I understand this to be the case... although you could have said SkW did not want to "pursue that flying" vs. "waste their time" with that flying. Which leads to your next quote:
The 50-seater is a thing of the past and is below skywest.

This sort of attitude is infantile, and does nothing but cause divisions, and mark you, and by proximity me, as elitist snobs. I would prefer if you did not paint us in that light.

P.S. There is no "regional" flying....it is all mainline flying contracted out.

If it were our flying, then we would be flying it.

Can you fit through the door with that ego? 50 seat flying was "beneath the majors," too. Hence the reason the genie is out of the bottle, and the 70-90 seat flying that SHOULD be mainline jobs has a lot of us capped at lower paying regionals. But, hey. If you wanna have your career beholden to another carrier and complain all the time when someone else gets a contract your company bid on, be my guest. It's not my goal, though.

Just updated it from the very start of the history file....

In ORD tonight coming in from Europe, I got talking to three SKYW pilots. One was an 8 year CA and other two newer FOs. They were talking about how ExpressJet stole their flying in SLC and now ORD.

They threw out every option that they could give XJT such as blocked allies, denied jumpseats, stepping on radios. These guys had serious hatred. At first it was fuuny to listen to but it got quite malicious. The XJT planes would suffer from poor baggage handeling to the rest of the items. It was these guys mission to make sure the new Mesa (by underbidding everyone else) would feel the pain.

Sad really.

nice flamebait! I bet half of the Skywest pilot group doesn't even know about the xjet/yo-nited flying. Very small percentage of pilots hang around on the internet flinging poo all day. As for me personally I'm happy to see anybody with better work rules and pay get awarded flying.

I love the drama-nature of the Airline Pilot forum section here, where many threads start with: "...and so it begins..."

:D

Man, I sure as hell hope we never share a cockpit together. . .as I'm sure some would say about me as well, but dang dude. . .tone it down a notch or two.

Your SkyWest cape won't protect you forever. Unless you're a SkyWest lifer, you're going to end up encountering a situation which you might just have to come down off your soap-box.

You know, I was thinking the same thing.

Who knows if merit was really where he said he was, who knows if he really encountered anyone, much less someonwhere with a SkyWest Airlines ID badge.

Especially coming from a guy who resigned (or quit, whatever phrase you'd like to use) ExpressJet. Story is suspect.

Oh god. It's like:

"...and so it beings..."

"Here it comes!"

"I heard from a line check airman..."

"Heard it here first!"

Merit-

No insults intended, but this thread needs to be locked. It does no good for anyone. Those guys don't speak for the whole group, and for you to post this, it makes SKYW pilots ALL seem like this. Theres a few of us on this board that are good examples that we are not.

Threads please lock this thread.

This is not the kind of image we want to portray while we are starting a union drive. Once again, it may have been a couple of pilots, but please keep in mind we have nearly 3,000. Put 3,000 people in a small room and you'll realize just how big our pilot group is.

I think it's good if we talk about how a couple of rogues aren't representative of anyone other than themselves, wouldn't you think?

Those Delta guys...

Those Comair guys...

Those Continental guys...

It's a pretty bigoted way to look at any couple of people as being representative of a whole in my opinion.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is... where exactly you are seeing that we lowball'd everyone on the bid in such a way to actually lose money.

I wonder why we are reactivating the XM radio in all aircraft that will be flying under UAL colors too... must be taking a loss on that as well. ;)

The cash bleeding that you are referring too is no longer existent... Had we done nothing more but continue our contract with CAL (which would most likely have resulted in a few more furloughs) then we would not be in the red much longer since we've streamlined our operations. You can easily see that trend via the Quarterly Reports.

How does everyone make the wild jump from "streamlined, efficient operation, competitively priced" to "bottom of the barrel, flying at a loss", bidder?

I know it seems hard to believe in this economic environment... but don't you think that it's possible folks are looking for a good quality product, fairly priced vs. just the "cheapest" product?

Just curious.

Bob

(I'm really trying to cut back on my kool-aid intake... I swear it. ;))

Because a much more expensive pilot group, you, beat out in price and price alone against the likes of TSA and other lower cost airlines.

Just because you are going to be profitable doesn't mean you're not doing some flying at a loss. I haven't looked too deeply into your quarterly reports, but if you're losing $100,000/month not flying but then you're getting paid basically the cost of the lease per month for the contract, you're flying at a loss. And that's basically what you're doing. Think of what Wal-Mart does on Black Friday to drive customers into the store. Your CoEx division is making money, but overall you're due to paying leases on airplanes that aren't being fully utilized. Now XJET isn't taking such a full bath on those leases, so now the profits from CoEx can bring you're company back to profitability.

Don't take this as bashing your pilot group. This is nothing against the group at all, this is management's decision.

Good luck guys.

No one stole anyone's flying...its United flying that was contracted out. SkyWest people bitching need to get their panties out of a wad and see what they're doing to the industry.

Please refer to the reasoned responses by pilots from several airlines in this thread. A story about a few SkyW pilots allegedly talking non-sense from a guy who quit the industry shouldn't get everyone's blood pressure going. Relax :)

No offense taken... but a more expensive pilot group does not equal a more expensive operation as a whole. There are soooo many other ways an airline can maintain profitability and be competitively priced without dropping pilot pay to the bottom of the barrel.

The line of thinking that you are representing is a "management" tool at many other carriers... "We can't be competitive because we pay you pilots too much! We need to you take concessions in order to get better contracts!". When in actuality, pilot pay is a small part of the overall operation and efficiencies in any airline.

In addition, all parked airframe leases are being covered by CAL and not XJT (per the latest CPA). All other airframes are being leased though CAL at a significantly reduced lease rate than prior to our latest 7 year CPA with them. So your theory above... while sound under the circumstances you've created... does not hold much water in this specific scenario.

My challenge to you is to simply show me exactly where it shows that we beat everyone out in "price and price alone".

reasoned and calm debate can continue...no more childish jabs to separate us or this thread will be closed.

When it becomes public then you'll know. There isn't anything online I can show you since there's not, this isn't published information right off the bat.
