An observation about airlines that are growing rapidly and hiring

Guys hired in 2005 upgraded in 18 months.

Guys hired in 2007 were furloughed and never upgraded.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

Buddy of mine was hired into ASA 9/2005 and just got their shot at upgrading in early 2013 (first available). Instead they went to US Airways. Eight year upgrade...yay.

Ummm... Think about that for a moment. Your buddy went to US Airways never having been a captain. He got screwed... how?

If JetBlue, Spirit, SWA, etc. are smart they'd hire all their pilots from the regionals and put the hurt on the legacies...

Anyone from any of the above airlines want to take note? And then meet me by the nacho cart?

Airlines....hmm....you have better odds at the blackjack table of "gettin it right." XJT was the place to go as far as regionals just a few years ago, now it's the place to leave. This stuff changes so fast you might as well throw some darts at a board to pick my friend! Try to enjoy the ride, weeeeeeeeeeeee!

He didn't get screwed. My point was even the ASA side of the house has been pretty stagnant over the past decade.

Most of the bigger regionals exploded in size following 9/11. Those hired around then and shortly thereafterward did well as far as riding the wave went.

I was lucky at AWAC because the company transitioned from Midwest to a East coast flying, and a ton of guys bailed even as we lost ~20% of the fleet. Also 2005-2007 saw a decent amount of hiring at the major carriers.
