SCBlur, if you don't mind me asking what sort of qualifications were you hired with? Was it right at 135mins or did you have more?

I don't mind at all:

1750 TT
50 Multi
600 XC (point-to-point w/ a landing, not 50nm)
100 Instrument, 22 actual
100 night

I got lucky with the multi time, most of the guys in my class had more multi time than me, several hundred hours in fact. They were all MEI's that worked at flight schools with twins. I got my MEI license, but never worked as one as I was not able to find a local flight school where I could get MEI work, so I had to pay for all my multi time. Painful.

When you say long...how long are we talking about?

More than a year, sometimes around two. That's what I've been hearing around the BUR base from other pilots. Of course one can always get lucky, and there is the occasional exception to the rule. The general consensus I've been getting is that if somebody wants to fast-track into the turbines, it is very possible to do so at around 6 months (sometimes sooner, I've heard stories of upgrades at 2 months), as long as you're willing to leave the west coast. There are often turbine slots that open up, if you're willing to relocate to a less than popular location.

It's just supply and demand really. I upgraded to the 99 after six months in the chieftan and I was west coast based. I would have been upgraded sooner but they didn't have enough chieftan pilots to cover while I would have been in training.

If you are based in OAK or PDX you must understand that you will more than likely have to leave to get upgraded into turbine equipment. My roomate from IOE is still in the chieftan while I've been flying the metro since the summer of 2008. Thats something to think about.

With that being some of those outstations that are always open are that way for a reason.;)
