American loses clubs, costs golfer shot at U.S. Open qualifying

It's definitely the airlines fault but you would think someone in a position to play in a major golf event would be a little more resourceful in obtaining another set of clubs instead of wasting time ranting about it on Twitter.

It's the airlines fault, but like maintenance, weather, ATC, crew issues, etc it's a very real possibility.

I don't think it would be a terrible idea to divide your clubs into two separate but useable groups. Either check them both or FedEx one.

Threat and error management has real world application.

It's a US Open qualifier. A lot of these guys aren't professionals, nor do most have any sponsorships and have to pay their way to try and get a tour card in the states.

Surely can't be serious to see comments about rental clubs or a golf store??? Seriously!? o_O

Must not know much about the game.

Get as similar off the shelf clubs as possible and try and qualify or give up, withdraw and take to twitter? I know which option I would choose.

Its really not that simple. My brother is a + handicap, meaning he shoots under par and you can't walk into most shops and fit him for a set of clubs. The stiffness of the shafts on his drivers are not usually carried and are a special order item. His putter is also not the same and the shaft lengths on all of his irons are custom cut to size. The cost of entering the qualifiers for a tournament like this are somewhat steep and having to show up and play with off the shelf clubs just wouldn't make sense. Its akin to, "Hey Valentino Rossi, your Moto GP bikes didn't show up to this weekends race, but there is a Yamaha dealership down the street with a couple prepped race bikes you could borrow".

Precisely.

But at the end of the day, if you're in a pinch and the golfer is as important as he portrays himself, I'm sure the manufacturer could FedEx some comparable clubs.

Or maybe he should fly Delta. RFID is off the chains.

Probably should have flown Delta! Just trying to point out that its not as simple as some are making it out to be. Most of these guys are playing custom sets that would probably take a few weeks to get out of the factory. My brother can't even hit my driver as he over flexes the shaft so bad it causes a major fade.If the guy is paying his own travel and entry fees to try to make the tour, it would be just throwing money away to play a set of clubs he isn't comfortable with. He is probably playing himself up to be more important than he probably is, but it still doesn't excuse the fact that the airline is to blame here, not him.

What if....he took steps to get new clubs and complained on twitter at the same time. It's not like tweeting is a time consuming activity. I don't blame him for being pissed at all and there's not a person here who wouldn't be.

Again a set of clubs these guys are using are probably around $3-4000, fitted, gripped and tuned specifically. Off the shelf clubs would literally be a waste of time. I'm a decent handicap and even I don't have off the shelf clubs.

Truth. You can both throw your nation into legal turmoil and wreck international relations with 140 characters at a time, can't we? :)

Seriously, bowling alleys have rental shoes and house balls , do you mean to tell me that a golf course wouldn't have rental equipment for the guy to use?
It's just golf. How hard could it be?

Yup! I mean, all you really need is a driver and a pitching wedge.

I like driving. Getting the rest of the way to the green can be fun provided I kept it near the fairway (of the current hole preferably). But putting...that makes me want to break things.

Not sure if they have one out in Vegas, but TopGolf is amazing. It's like Dave &Busters meets a driving range.

Directly beside our crew hotel

So the general consensus here is "sorry bro, you paid a bunch of money for a ticket and extra for your clubs, how could you possibly expect us to do what we said we would do?" Is that the gist of it?

No. The airline absolutely should be liable. BUT no airline is perfect, every airline loses bags occasionally, if what you're doing is that important, make contingency plans.

I dunno,Happy Gilmore figured it out pretty quickly and overcame a 4 stroke deficit to beat Shooter McGavin in the Tour Championship...and he was just a hockey player with no golf experience.
