American Eagle told to play ball or become Comair-II

People have to remember, that for years, the only places that required TPIC were SWA, FEDEX, and UPS.

Do United, Delta, or Airways/American have that requirement?

TPIC, yes, but it's not a hard requirement.

The problem is that too many folks with the TPIC can't or won't move on for a number of reasons, so instead of saying "Ok, well, you've got three DUI's and no degree, we'll take a peek at you because you have TPIC, we'll just be a little flexible with that and take a peek at your FO."

(totally serious)

I don't know if it is completely meaningless, but it is not the silver bullet that it might have been once. I certainly takes more then TPIC to get considered, but like Bob mentioned, it might take the TPIC just to get a look at some carriers. I have flown with a few captains that were, how shall I say, unhappy that I managed to get on with B6 with no TPIC when they have had apps in for years.

Lol, let me guess... it's because you're black... right?

Is that what they said? If not trust me, they were thinking it!

Well hey, I meet all the requirements for United and my app is on AirlineApps, why aren't they calling? (That's rhetorical, btw)

Ultimately the more boxes you can check (MTPIC, Degree, etc) the better off you're going to be.

Soooo... did you get an offer of employment after that?

Nope. Funny story... kind of... now that years later it worked out for me elsewhere.

I went in to the morning group interview session, very well prepped by the CP I knew as well as a few other people, and hit all the right notes. Then, after lunch I went into the first of two 1 on 2 interviews. I was first sent to an HR guy (Frank if any VXers are playing along at home) and the CP Mark. I was in there for all of maybe 15 minutes. A few logbook questions from Mark and a few HR questions from Frank. After that Frank says I am good to go and asks if I have everything with me. I ask him what about the second 1 on 2 panel I am supposed to do and he says I'm all set. I tell him that in that case, my coat is still upstairs in the break room so he walks me back upstairs, I get my coat, and we walk back to the elevator. He asks me how I think it went to which I said I think it went really well. He says he thinks so too and that he thinks I'll be back here really soon and that they are going to do phone calls in 2 weeks. He then puts me on the elevator, pushes the first floor button and says thanks so much for coming in.

One week later I get a thanks but no thanks email. So I email one of the guys I know there (a Fleet Standards captain) to tell him thanks for all his help but that it didn't work out and that I'll try again in a year. I get a very terse email back saying that I walked out of the interview and no showed the second 1 on 2 panel so of course they can't hire me.

Go figure. I went after that job for 4 years and it ended like that.

Yep, I have met those folks as well!

Just like I told you, man.

But was Captain Haterade an Army vet with flight experienced in the Armed Forces, well-networked and instead of their little "snit" of anger, did they say, "Hey, I'm proud of you. When you get done with ground school, do you mind being a point of contact for me at your new airline?"

Nope, they just want to bug out. I experienced the same.

Be MORE than just an application. Hell, my cat Sprite probably has an application in there too and what does that mean? Jack.

How often do you update your flight times (or anything else like "date available") on AirlineApps? When a company has 3000 qualified applications on file often times they have to sort by something more than just "qualified" and they use "most recently updated". A friend of mine was helping out HR with pilot recruiting and he said that almost all of the big name company's HR people told him to update his apps at least every month if not more often. It might not help at first but when the HR people see the same name in the top 25 of the list sorted by date of update EVERY time... they will make the call eventually.

Did those guys have helicopter time?

There you go. Whether on the app or not, it made a difference. :)

Precisely.

I tell people all the time, "You meet the qualifications and have applied… SO!?"

You're on their radar screen along with several thousand other pilots.

Networked?

Done anything extraordinary?

Are you hungry?

A pilot just can't think it's a numbers game, sit on their fat ass and expect magic. This isn't high school.

I probably update about every two weeks. I usually do it the same time I'm putting information in Logbook Pro. I should probably do it more.

In all honesty though, my résumé is about 3.4K TT, lots of piston PIC, about 1,000 multi, and now approaching 200 121 SIC in the old school Dash. I've got some 135, um, "history" that I'm not going to detail that's also probably not helping me.

Just being a realist, but I figure I've got 4-6 years of regional life ahead of me while I check a few more boxes (including degree) before a Legacy gets around to me, unless someone like B6 of F9 calls because all they're guys are going to Legacys. I'm trying to figure out where the best place to spend that time would be.

I get it, I really do. I appreciate what you're throwing down. Working on it.

Do you think they noticed I was black at the interview? Hmmm....

Anyway, believe me, there are guys there that have no shame about admitting it. I have heard guys regularly say in the past, "Well, they'll have to get through all of the minorities and interns before I have a chance to get it."

Heard it with my own ears, more then once.

Nope, Nope, Nope, and Hell no!

The most I got was, "Ah, I wouldn't want to go over to a company like that anyway," "It's not what it used to be ya know," "Their medical is really bad!" etc etc etc.

Oh god. I heard that too. Lots.

Meanwhile, I think I was the only civilian in my class of 30 (50% of us were civilians) that even upgraded to captain. I didn't have a lot of turbine PIC, but I had it.

Your former colleagues are going to have a long, bitter career if they don't stroke out first. BMI? Neck size?

Is that your TV, boy? :D

I know of one PNCL FO that interviewed at Delta in the last 6 weeks or so and has a class date. Don't know a name and never met him, just heard the story though a buddy there, no turbine PIC and no military AFAIK.

So it can be done.
