American Eagle Job Fair LAX today

Hi All,

Not sure if anyone has posted about the AE job fair experience's yet. My google-fu didn't reveal anything so I'll post what happened. Mods feel free to delete if this has already been covered.

Anyhow, the fair was held at the LA Sheraton today. Had to pay for parking ($11.00 for 2 hours! aaagh). Candidates were all lined up in the hallway outside the conference room and they let us in right around 10am. There were about 25-30 of us. There was every type of person and age range represented. I was very suprised to see some people didn't even bother to put a suit on(they had T-shirt, jeans, non-business dress). Anyhow, they put on a presentation with info. on the 700 pilots they want to hire(and they said possibly more) and that they've hired approximately 250 so far this year. Also mentioned that they are no longer are giving people the 50 ATP questions at the interviews. They mentioned the fact that the physical is now cut down by a large margin instead of the one day ordeal they use to do. After talking about AE they asked for questions and then the 4 reps(2 HR and 1 Capt, 1 FO) broke up into different parts of the room and we were given the opportunity to talk to them and people were given invites to interview in the afternoon/evening. I didn't meet the 800TT mins so they were nice and took my resume, told me to keep updating it. Overall, a very good way to find out info. about AE and to see what they are looking for. The reps were friendly and seemed very nice.

Sounds like we got the same presentation when they visited our college. Supposedly they did away with their in house medicals. They now except outside 1st class medicals.

They didn't really talk about upgrades times(I wonder why). Just kept talking about how stable and great the company was. Sounds like a good place to work, if you don't mind a long upgrade time. LOL

Does that mean 250 that passed through training, or just 250 given job offers? Almost half of the year done and they only hired 1/3 of what they need? The summer schedule should be really fun :insane:

From my understanding of what they were saying, 250 were hired. Not sure if they actually made it all through training they didn't say. They also did mention that new classes were starting every other week(think they said on mondays). Seat lock is 14 months and starts the first day of training.
 
So here's a question to ponder - AE has an extensive physical where they check various things. I can't pass the standard color vision tests, but I have a statement of something or other (not a waiver, though) that shows that I passed the signal light gun test and can get an unrestricted 1st class medical. Whenever I get my medical, I just show the AME the letter, and he skips the color vision test.

So would AE deny me employment if I couldn't pass their color vision test? If so, wouldn't that be grounds for federal employment discrimination? I've read elsewhere that similar cases have been brought up against airlines for similar situations.
 
From their presentation, it seemed like they were more concerned with any violations(especially recent ones) rather than any medical issues. They kept harping on if you had any violations/background issues to disclose them or you'd be DQ'd. They made it sound like the physical now is a joke compared to what it was before. You might want to go and see them and talk to the recruiters.
 
A lot of people cringed when they heard that AE won't look at you if you have any type of alcohol offense within the past 5 years. Even after five years pass, there's a good chance you won't even be looked at then.

Again, they said the NASA style medicals are out the window. You just need an outside 1st class medical. If you have a statement of demonstrated ability (SODA) then you should still be good to go. However, you may want to contact somebody at AE to be sure.

Yup, upgrade times are pretty rough. They were hesitant to say anything but they finally came out and said 7-8 years. However, they were quick to point out that they'll have a lot of pilots transitioning over to AA in a few years so upgrade times could drop.

OK, I give up. What's a "NASA style medical"? We talking "Right Stuff" kinda thing that they'd give you at the interview, above and beyond Class I?
 
Yeah, it's probably a bit of an exageration, but their medicals are often compared to that famous scene in "The Right Stuff."

Man... I don't care what the job is--I ain't running down a hall (and an elevator) in a hospital johnnie dragging an enema bag. I don't care if AA DOES get that 30.5% pay raise!!!!
 
I don't know personally(maybe one of the resident Eagle guys could chime in on this) but it use to be a 1 day long ordeal(hence the connotation to the "right-stuff"). but, according to HR not much left of the old "right stuff" medical left.

Who knows at this rate in a year or two they'll probably eliminate the whole process and ask, "when can you start?" outright after they receive your app. :sarcasm:
 
I did the medical last fall....its definitely a show. Nasa all the way. Started off with fasting blood work. And, they asked you to come ready to pee so you had to chug water all morning. After blood and urine came the hearing test, eye test, and inner ear pressure test. Then you get naked and lay on a table while some doctor touches you from head to toe, to include the family jewels. then she gives you an ekg. The most painful part is when she pulls off the pads. i had bald spots on my chest.

im glad they got rid of it. Seemed a little overboard.

AA must be desperate, A recruiter of theirs have e-mailed me a couple times telling me that as soon as I meet ATP's TT reduced mins, to let them know and they will get me an interview ASAP, and Im only at 250/140
