Amazon proposes Drone-only delivery airspace

"At present there are about 85,000 conventional flights a day in the US involving commercial, cargo, military and general aircraft. Amazon believes that within a decade that number will be dwarfed in the US and globally by unmanned drones flying at low altitudes."

I can't wait for the future, when you can sit on your back porch sipping a beer and indulge in the sound of buzzing quadcopters delivering rubber bands and selfie sticks to individuals that can't be bothered with leaving the house

The plus side is you could order more beer without risk of DUI :)

Not entirely sure how I will enjoy a beer on the porch with a bunch of buzzing things around....now if it is cold and there are multiple beers I might forget the buzzing. Or just have it bring me scotch. My girlfriend will have to find a new job though if she no longer has to bring me drinks.

I personally think there has to be a happy medium between drones and aircraft. I think their proposal on airspace is a first attempt with little understanding on airspace or other aviation issues. With more of an emphasis on SHARING and learning to all survive together, I am sure we can find a way to get along. Or target the drones carrying the best goods (coldest beer, nicest watches, etc) so that we can nicely intercept them and leave post it notes in their place.

Why the hate on Multirotors or "drones"? They can create jobs and it's actually a fun hobby. It will be regulated eventually by the FAA with defined airspace. It's like hating on ultralights. Just don't be that guy/girl that ruins it for everybody.

If they're aiming for something completely automated, how many jobs is this initiative going to create?

They recently built a fulfillment center in my home state, with some hefty tax breaks, to bring some jobs into the area. Now we get the privilege of paying state sales tax on our amazon purchases.

How's that looking for future employees?

What's the highest value order from Amazon that you would have delivered by an airborne drone, a phone, a tablet, a book? I live in a suburb of L.A. with utilities (power/phone/cable) that are still above ground, the buzz of the drone will be a wake up call to the scumbags that something of value might fall out of the sky.

I wouldn't mind losing the first 200 feet agl as long as they can't operate within 4 miles of an airport or face an astronomical fine. The noise complaints will force the drones higher though and people will violate airspace, then we have problems.

I don't know that I would trust amazon with the airspace over my house, and as mentioned above I don't think they'd follow regulations even if said airspace was regulated.

I'll "hate on" all of the above, thanks. If something is flying over my house, it had damned well better be at least Part 23 certificated with a certificated pilot at the controls. I'm tired of all these loose regulations being pushed by AOPA for "sport" flying and such, and now we're talking about armies of flying robots filling the skies. No! Just no!
