Alaska Hawaiian Merger

Heving been through a merger, it’s (a) cool watching this one from the outside and (2) entertaining to see people fight about what’s going to be.

A merger isn’t about building a better system and rationalizing the companies, the BOD is producing shareholder value for current and future investors. If it builds a better airline, it’s a welcome, but perhaps unintentional consequence.

My own was “You got debt, we got debt, if we band together we can renegotiate better terms with minimal market overlap so it’ll get approved. Luckily, we were off the heels of a hostile takeover so they were able to leverage that “Yay go TEAM!” spirit to build enough motive flow to launch off some speedbumps rather than be impeded by them like the USAir + AA + HP party.

Have fun, but getting regular peeks behind the curtain at my own airline, flight operations and their expectations are generally answered with a “Thank you for sharing, now go color” :)

You been through one merger, this is my third one son. I can use son, in this case right? :)

I like that you were able to work "motive flow" into that. I haven't heard that term since F/A-18 ground school. There are hornet parts probably still somewhere in a yard in UTC in San Diego that have their roots of being there in "motive flow", or maybe lack thereof.

26 years in a company with NATOPS-driven flight training flown by USAF training command weenies and the sound of the wild SouthernJets pilot in the jungle cacophony sounds like “<cricket><cricket>GUARD UNIT<cricket><cricket>”.

I slip out of my civilian occasionally. Ha!

Did you get any “peeks behind the curtain”?

Learning lessons for sure. Ultimate takeaway is no matter what you feel/think about the merger, and as sacrosanct as something like seniority is, at the end of the day you can’t change jack.

Knowing and accepting that in my 20s would have saved stress and thousands of keystrokes with the first merger.

Lesson learned for the second merger. That went a lot smoother by not engaging in online banter regarding culture, contract, and most importantly, seniority integration.

Now the third time? Even more chill. There’s some pilots arguing online how they know they’ll get screwed in the SLI, so to stop that and/or delay it from happening, they are by default going to vote no on the JCBA to stall the whole process. Mid 20s me would have flown off his rocker and written pages of a post in response. Now I just read, snort, and swipe to whatever is next. Yawnnnnn

That’s not what “peeks behind the curtain” means.
