Airshows shouldn't exist

So when we talk about airplanes falling out of the sky into cars and houses, it's only fair we include accidents such as Buffalo.

Sure, let us talk about it.

Since then regulations and rules were put in place to learn from those mistakes and prevent it from happening again. Will that be done here?

Yup, and I didn't see seggy lobbying HIS airline to shut down or start flying over unpopulated areas. I mean, the house they crashed into was miles from the airport. DANGER!!!

Even though you made a personal jab towards me (and the others from Colgan), I will be the bigger person and respond that I (and others) did work to improve the industry to get rules in place to prevent it from happening again.

Thank you.

Seriously. On a couple different levels.

In the span of less than three years you have had what, about 20 folks killed watching airshows. Was much learned (in regards to the closeness of the 'box' to those watching) in that time from the very high profile Reno accident to this one? Wouldn't making sure the airplanes were flying over no one (if they move people from houses then why not close the road?) a top priority based upon the recency of Reno?

Well, if you go back to the air show in '88 at Ramstein, one of the biggest changes was energy directed towards the crowd. Since then (and I believe previously), in the US there's been an establishment of a box the air show performers must remain in. This box keeps any high energy maneuvers parallel with the crowd. So there has been changes due to air show accidents. I do not know what the regulations are in the UK as this happened over there. I would imagine if this accident was shown to be outside the previously established box (or boundaries) the UK authorities may extend the parameters or limit high energy acts such as turbojet powered aircraft to non aerobatic maneuvers only. They really do learn from their mistakes just like the 121 world.

All of the people killed were watching one air race. No spectator has been killed at an air show since at least 2008. That's just the data I can find. I think it goes for deacades beyond that, I just can't find the data.

Once again, in the matter of a short period of time, 20 folks were killed either watching or just driving their car by an airshow. Doesn't matter if they were watching the show or not.

Oh. Didn't realize you were talking about the current UK accident totals. I thought you were referring to accidents in the US. If the number is 20, then that's just under the same number as all the performer and civilian deaths in the US since 2008, or seven years. And if Reno didn't happen it'd be well below.

Again, if you go to a basketball game with 20k people, four will die from choking alone (based on my previous post of 1 in 4,404). How many basketball, baseball and football games have more than that in attendance? Almost all of them. So while this seems tragic, compared to eating a hot dog, it's not even a blip on the radar.

I respect everyone's opinion here, even if I don't agree with them but one thing bothers me...

How could anyone question the "benefit" of airshows? I mean I've NEVER met any child who wasn't absolutely blown away by every aspect of an airshow. The fascination level is off the charts. I suppose the majority of us suffer from arrested development and still have those child-like responses to how cool airplanes are and what they're capable of.

Circuses should have been banned centuries ago because spectators and performers routinely get injured or killed. But they're fun so...

Sent from my impervious accident proof hardened concrete underground bunker.

Life is carcinogenic. It still stuns me that people reach adulthood without acknowledging this fact.

The very processes which keep you alive destroy your body. Breathing? WORST THING EVER for long life. Seriously. Metabolism is the #1 killer. You want to live forever? Stop thinking about airplanes and start thinking about Science.

Here's the moutbreathing version for wookies:

AFAICT, the beard is a gimmick. And Sky Bully bless him, De Grey is not above using a Gimmick. But whilst not by any rational notion an expert or even a particularly talented amateur, his Science passes the smell-test for me. Anyway, food for thought.

Beards do reduce solar radiation exposure by a significant amount, supposedly...

There's one regulation that seriously hampers a small group of pilots from "checking a box", from an HR perspective, without taking a 70% paycut, that I will argue against forever.

Thread creep, yes, but it is a dumb rule. 1000 hour 121 SIC requirement is what I'm referring to.

Is it for the greater good? Perhapse, but not all outside 121 is equal. Some are just as, if not more demanding, I would argue.

Michael Hutchence of INXS died of autoerotic asphyxiation.

End spanking the monkey NAO!

Wasn't that Carradine?

Guy in my training academy who had flown for a regional, told me about the regional capt found in his hotel room in this way after failing to show up for the morning van ride.

Both, actually.
