Airshow Accident

Just because it is legal doesn't make it safe.

Unfortunately, this is a great-sounding platitude, but it is meaningless when it isn't grounded in a baseline of what "safe" means.

All of life involves risk assessment and mitigation. Every action is an acceptance of a particular level of risk. If we really wanted to be "safe" in aviation, we would never even crank engine #1.

As has been demonstrated many times in the discussion on JC, Mark, your baseline acceptable level of risk in all things aviation is not the same as other peoples'. There are many people who are perfectly happy to accept risk levels that are notably higher than are acceptable in 121 operations.

Safety Third.

Here is the thing. In the span of less than three years you have had what, about 20 folks killed watching airshows. Was much learned (in regards to the closeness of the 'box' to those watching) in that time from the very high profile Reno accident to this one? Wouldn't making sure the airplanes were flying over no one (if they move people from houses then why not close the road?) a top priority based upon the recency of Reno?
