Airports want To Opt Out of TSA

The boiling point for me was when I had to explain to "my boss" how the Explosive Trace Detection machine worked.

She compared it to the machine that keeps the burgers warm at Burger King and and said "the ETD was a big step up from the FRY cooker"!

She later got fired for sleeping around with one of the supervisors. Kinda proves my point!

TSA? Polite? Yeah if you like being "sir'd" to death.

Just because someone calls me "sir" doesn't make them polite. That title has become a misnomer nowadays.

You can usually translate "sir" to mean "dumb ass." For example, "SIR, you are going to have to wait your turn." or "Excuse me SIR, you can't go in there!" or "I'm sorry SIR but you'll have to stand there while I wave this wand all over your private parts and humiliate you."

I will grant that as people, Argenbright (and other pre 9-11 private screening companies) and TSA are about the same types, but Argenbrights could lose their jobs if they messed up. If someone is a jerk then that TSA patch on the shirt is a license to abuse power.

I've got to say, I've been in and out of ROC several times, and the contract screeners there are a lot nicer than your typical TSA folk. Plus, I've never had to wait in line! (Of course, having two concourses with two separate checkpoints for an airport that's now 80% RJs probably has a lot to do with that ...)

The TSA is a five-alarm goat rodeo, no question about it. Airport security is a national-security issue. However, it seems like the best way to handle it is to have private companies (under STRICT oversight) handling it. We definitely need to be rid of the folks who speak no English, have criminal backgrounds, etc. And (loathe though I may be to grow the government!!) airport security, as a national security matter, needs to be federally funded, not subsidized by the airlines. Reducing some of the piles of taxes on airline tickets is one sure way for the airlines to improve their revenue picture, too.

I think it really all boils down to just doing the job. Private? Federal? Doesn't matter.

The big kicker is the fact that the average American doesn't want to pay for security. We'll go out and accept the $45 "performance guarantee" (read: scam) on a television at Best Buy, but lord have mercy if there is a $45 security fee when you hop on a $25,000,000 aircraft with 39,000 pounds of liquid explosive capable of derailing an entire nation's economy.

Nice agents, mean agents? I could honestly care less because I'm not there for conversation or hear the "hey, nice shoes, cappy!". Just get the job done.

And that, in the end, is the problem. We want good security, but then, we don't want to pay for it.

Sounds like everything else with America. Nobody is willing to make any kind of sacrifice for anything.

And we've got politicians telling us that we don't have to. Want expensive government programs and low taxes? No worries, we'll just goose the deficit and the national debt for you!

I bought a new reciever at Best Buy yesterday, and they tried that mess : "Sir, would you like to pay $35.00 fo..."

STOP!!! No, thanks....if it breaks, I'll just bring it back.

Sorry for the rant...

Like grandma always said, "Ya get what ya pay for".

I'm thinking it's like the old car ad.

You know, where they say "you can pay me now, or you can pay me more later."

Mike, I will give anyone a chance but I can only follow someone so long when they are on the wrong path.

If you are flying with someone from LA to Vegas, you can only fly over the ocean into the setting sun for so long before you need to speak up.

I'll buy that.

Especially when it comes to the TSA!

Mike,

I just want to point out that I am not one of those hippies that cries about the government all the time and hates the military. I just want to correct some of the impressions that some had about the TSA and how it works.

I grew up military and lived it till I was 22. I did a few years of AFROTC at CU-Boulder and decided that I did not want to sign for the 10 years they were wanting out of me. Had it been only 4 years or maybe even 6 I would probably be flying in the AF right now. That C-17 was mighty tempting! Kinda funny how all they show off though is F-16s and 15s.

I will support the guys in the military to no end, I appreciate the work you guys do and even miss that life at times but not quite enough to want to get back into it!

No need to clarify anything here, partner. I never got that impression at all. I too think the TSA are a bunch of clowns with some of the stuff I've seen them pull.

I'm with ya on that!

Oh lord, I hope that they do not go back to private security screeners, I still remember the days before the TSA, it was terrible.

And that's the problem, my friend. If we go back to private screeners, will it make anything better? Let me remind you, folks, of the fiasco that was the security screening system before the TSA was in place.

The people who are in place now, while many of them are not the brightest bulbs in the universe, are way better than the jokers who we had before.

Put it like this: I've never wanted to smack someone from the TSA. I can't say that for the private screeners that were there before.

If we go back to private screeners, we have to have very high standards and huge fines for companies who do not comply.
