Airliners parked in the desert

It's also the airport where the Nicolas Cage movie ConAir was filmed. I'm sure everyone will sleep better knowing that!

[/ QUOTE ]Ehh....the airport scenes in ConAir were filmed at Wendover, UT (ENV). A member of the film crew was killed there during production, crushed under some part of the aircraft--which then sat on the ramp, fenced off, for a number of years until the subsequent litigation was resolved. The aircraft was still there as of Dec 2000, I haven't been through there since.

Heres a serious question, could I just walk up to that airfield and walk around in the old birds?

I know the one in the mojave desert is gated off from what I can tell when I drove by there. It would be interesting to know if it is possible to get a tour of the facilities.. Does anyone know who runs this place??

I flew into Pinal Airpark (MJZ) in Marana, AZ last January. Lots of 747's and other jets sleep there. Evergreen Aviation have a MX and teardown hanger there...also an FBO on site. Nice place to stop for fuel if they are still operating. Check out the link for some of the pictures that I took. Enjoy! Pinal Airpark

In Arizona, there are two gigantic airline graveyards. Goodyear airport has a lot of old airliners in western phoenix. Also, there is Pinal airport halfway between Tuscon and Phoenix. They have all kinds of retired airliners there. It's also the airport where the Nicolas Cage movie ConAir was filmed. I'm sure everyone will sleep better knowing that!

Mav,

Don't forget Kingman too. Large airliner storage and getting bigger.

On a long roadtrip I took last year from Seattle to Phoenix I saw just hundreds and hundreds of planes sitting out in Mojave, Ca.

Ok you may think i m crazy for even asking but....

What would be the feasibility of getting one of those old 727s or DC 9's and converting it to a freighter to use in a 135 operation?

Would you be able to make a profit for cargo or even find enough cargo to fill one.

Would it be too Big? Considering most freight dogs fly 340, 414's, Navajo's, Aerocommanders, And Metroliners.

What kind of costs would something like that be. The intial costs of bringing it back out of the desert and into good working order.

Also if you were to get a huge plane like that how would you go about finding customers with the needs for such enormous capacity.

Also are most of those planes out there for sale or are they just waiting for the scrappers torch? I noticed some like that DC 10 was pretty much canniblized but some of the 727's looked like they were intact. What will eventually happen to them.

thanks for your help

Many 727s are at TUS at a company called Hamilton Aviation. Hamilton both stores/scraps airliners and converts 727s from pax to cargo configuration adding a large cargo door to the left side of the jet.
