Airline Travel: ZED vs. ID90 vs. NonRev

Just FYI going to Perth to dive the GBR is like going to Los Angeles to see the statue of liberty :)

Perth is completely on the opposite side of oz from the GBR......I believe cairns or Brisbane are your best options for the reef. Have fun

Perhaps I misspoke.. I was looking at the Reef, but also at great white shark cage dives. There are several operators out of Perth.

You're right, though. That is a helluva oversight. Cairns would likely be a much better choice... Derp!

Guys you dont dive in Perth. You come to Perth so we can go up to Coral Bay and Ningaloo reef. The GBR isnt the only reef system here. From Port Hedland to Coral bay is untouched. I was just up there a month ago eating mud crab on the beach and swimming with whale sharks. Yes its more of a hike and would be easier to fly from SFO or LAX to BNE.

You come to Perth and Ill take you up there and we sleep on the beach, eat crabs, catch sharks and dive dive dive. However we have had 5 kills in the last 12 months from white pointers, making WA waters the most dangerous in the world.

When would you be coming over regardless of where you choose?

Im in the states most of Sept. For selfish reasons do Oz a different time and we'll do a proper meet and greet in Oz later down the track. Or do it twice. Hell if you had time we go up to the Philippines or a couple other sweet spots.

Thanks for all the great ideas, everybody!

I hadn't even thought about hostels for accomodations. Any tips on that sort of thing?

Hostels can be hit or miss, as far as cleanliness. But if you're adventurous they can be great too. When traveling alone its a great way to meet other travelers, and the good hostels plan nightly events for everyone. Usually going out on the town bar hopping. They also have many tours you can book through them too. So planning a dive would probably be pretty easy, especially from any hostel in Cairns or Perth.

It can also be a pain keeping your stuff secured. When in a room with lots of people, you'll have to keep you valuables secured, so it gets annoying when I want something to get. On the flip side, I stayed at a hostel in Amsterdam and there were about 10 college age girls in my room. One even slept on the bunk above me. But many hostels do separate out the sexes, while others don't.

I'm not entirely sure when I'll be coming. If I do make the trip to Australia, it'll be in early September. As it were, it's looking like I'll veer closer to the US and dive the Keys or the Caribbean this trip, as it'll be my first real saltwater experience as a diver. The more I ask about it, the more people tell me to just keep the effort of doing things to a minimum.

Australia looks like it might be good for a trip after the first of the year, when it's particularly warm down that way. I dunno. Nothing's set in stone yet.

And Saxman- thanks for the hostels tip!

Can a regional pilot with Delta/United benefits list for a jumpseat internationally on a different airline, say Emirates, (in hopes of getting a free seat in the back) or would it have to be a paid ZED?

Very few (if any) international airlines let you jump seat, even with an open seat in the back. You'll have to use zed or id90 fares.

Great information here! The only thing I can think of that wasn't mentioned was LAX-MEL-PER or LAX-BNE-PER. If you try for LAX but Delta and United look weight restricted and Qantas is packed solid to SYD, Qantas serves MEL with an A380 usually. And that A380 even has self serve bars in coach. From what I understand, loads are lighter than the multiple SYD flights. From MEL, you could go to PER domestically sans international tax. If MEL-PER doesn't look promising, you could try and jumpseat on United from MEL-SYD and connect to PER if times work out. I have never seen the MEL-SYD segment even close to full on United all the times I've checked for people. Another option would be LAX-BNE which would still allow you to avoid int'l fees on the next leg. SYD, MEL, and BNE all offer 3 ways to get to PER via Qantas, JetStar, and V Australia.

SFO-SYD when I went this month was restricted to 309 out of 374. I was #301 to make it on the flight. United treated me great.

Look possibly at HA from HNL to SYD or BNE, they don't go out weight restricted from what I can gather.
