Airline operated ramp towers?

ChasenSFO

hen teaser
Hey guys,

After searching around on google a bit, I was able to find a list of contracted ramp towers(although it was still incomplete since mine wasn't on there), but I can't seem to find a list of airline operated ones. I know UA runs the G tower in SFO and they have at least one tower in IAH. Just curious as I want to get back into the airlines soon and this job would be my first choice with one. Though I imagine there is a very low turn-over rate as the SFO controllers have all been there for over a decade.

Also wondering, is there a trend to out source more and more of these airline run ramp towers? Until 3 years ago, mine was run by United and controllers made 3 times what we do, and from the sounds of things the other tower may be in jeopardy of being contracted out. I know how unstable airline contracts can be, if I were to relocate I'd hope to find at least reasonable job security. Couldn't find much info on this stuff.

PIT was US Air as of 2008. That's all I know. PIT had a clause where its main, mainline carrier ran the ramp. All those guys were scary senior though.

PIT is still staffed by US Airways

PHL A tower is US Airways, F tower is US Airways Express. I get the impression you have to know someone to get a job up there but not totally clear on how that works.

MWAA (IAD) is staffed by the airports authority, they have job postings every so often on their website, seem to require prior ATC terminal experience.

My former CP is a new ramp guy inn IAD. I'm pretty sure it was several years before he got the call. I'm glad he did and it is funny the first time I heard him up there. There used to be a lot of ACA guys that worked up there. I guess it makes sense since they were the ones who helped start the "spots" in IAD.

PHX T4 North has a US run ramp tower. Very senior, but I actually interviewed for it before I moved to Chicago. It's a rotation of positions, 1 day you're working gate freq's for pushback, the next you're coordinating gates and what not.

Hmm from the info I've gotten from you guys, looks like US Airways is a good bet against out sourcing the ramp towers unlike United. My name has come been mentioned over in the UA tower here I'm told, which is great. However, given the trend with that company, I'd imagine its a matter of when, not if, that tower becomes out sourced and I'd end up with about the same compensation I have now to do 3 times the work. Sad every part of the industry seems to be headed this way.

Thanks again guys.

Here at ATL, Ramps 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, and Taxilane Dixie are operated by Delta. My company, TBI Airport Mgt. runs Ramps 3, 4, and 9. We used to have 5/6 a little over a year ago, but Delta decided to take over. Was surprised the city let them have Ramp 5 since its still a good mix of Delta, Air Tran, and USAir, plust the occasional Spirit/Frontier.

Any Ramp Tower positions at PHL (Spot 1 through 11), PHX, CLT, PIT are operated by US. It requires becoming a Fleet Service Agent and particularly becoming a Lead Agent (aka Senior enough to hold the line). IAD and LAS are run by the (County) and pay very well! ATL, I think the only one contracted out is Ramp 3/4 (C) and I think 8/9 (F)

Is a fleet service agent a fueler or an A&P at Airways?

Ah. I was a lead bag crusher at Skywest and it somehow brought me here, guess you just have to know the right people.
Ops 5378, we still need that lav service at 38.

(If you'd been T1 and had binoculars you would have laughed yesterday)

I can't speak for other stations, but PHX for US are all fleet service agents in the tower. It takes a long time to get up there.

American runs towers in MIA, ORD, and DFW. I had an internal interview for the tower in MIA...or at least I would have if I hadn't gotten the flu. American and United draw operations, coordinators, and tower controllers from the customer service ranks, US Airways and Delta from the fleet service ranks. At US as far as I know, ramp control functions are one of the few things the fleet service group has been able to hold on to in recent years.
