Airforce One Special

I would be surprised if at the time it was filmed, he was actually president. In fact it couldn't have been since they said they were picking him up from Chicago.

It wasnt the 74 either, it looked more like the 73.

From the cockpit shot it was the 757, and not the 737!

Anyone else get tired of seeing the same clips of the 747, over and over and over again. . .

Does anybody know if they carry a spare crew for inflight? Or is the crew exempt from the requirements for another crew member on the long flights?

Just watched it on DVR... it was good, but I wanted to know more about the history.. and less about the top secret flight to Iraq.. although that was interesting.. can't believe that was 6ish year ago already

Good show. Those planes sure are clean!

I agree that GWB got a lot of crap about 9/11 that he didn't deserve.

The other day Air Force One overflew Dulles. We asked the ground control if we really did see AF1 just cross over. All the controller did was double click the mic.

I think its amazing at how ill-eqipped the aircraft was on Sept 11th. Alot of people gave Bush #### for taking so long to address the public on Sept 11th, but really it was just because he was being protected and had no way of speaking publicly.

It has come to Dulles several times before. Once while I was at work.

How can we watch this if we didn't have the National Geographic Channel? Damn basic cable.:banghead:

That's awesome that AF1 was a "Gulfstream" for the trip to Iraq.

Even better is the pilot who asked if that was AF1 and the controller said no, it's a Gulfstream.

:laff:

That's what I was thinking. How could they fly half way across the world without being spotted as a 747 and AF1 by traffic? I liked the Marine 1 program they had after it. That was pretty interesting too.

Both the AFI and Marine 1 episodes were highly interesting to me, I like how in the Marine 1 episode they show how complex it is to land on the South Lawn.

I enjoyed both shows, a couple things stuck out to me on the AF1 episode:

-They didn't wear (or from the way things looked, even have) shoulder harnesses on AF1. They showed them landing and no one had a shoulder harness on.

-Colonel Scott Turner, Obama's pilot, stated they can't divert like an airliner can. So the airport is covered in ice or there is level 5 activity with microbursts on the field and you continue to the field? Hmm... (That's a rhetoric question by the way)

I didn't watch but I imagine what he meant was that he can't just go to an alternate and land because they have no ground support, no Secret Service besides what is on the plane, etc. I would guess that instead of landing at an alternate, they would aerial refuel and head back to DC or loiter until it was safe to land at their intended destination. Just a guess.

Well, silly...T'storms are held in a holding pattern 20nm North of the field until AF1 is safely on the ground.;)

Actually, I think the strongest microburst ever recorded happened shortly after AF1 landed. Not sure the date or the place (Andrews AFB?) and currently too lazy to look it up.

I did find it interesting that the Obama's new B747 pilot flew as commander and right seat on the backup 747 for Bush2 and also flew commander on the B757 flying Obama to DC for the swearing in. Dual qualified would be a difficult task.

UPS had/has the contract for training those guys/girls on the B757 when they first got them. They were there when I was instructing on the 757 but you had to have an Air Force background (security clearance and procedures I guess) to teach them and I was just a civilian puke. :p

I thought that it was interesting how the FO moves to the CA seat upon a new administration. I thought that it was a new crew completely. Did you notice the new FO for the Obama admin?

Did they get to the bottom of the traffic following 10 miles behind without comm/transponder on 9/11?

I'm thinking maybe the guy got the idea and decided (smartly) to keep his pie hole shut.

Excellant show! Did you guys cach the one they did about Marine One and HMX-1 earlier on in the evening? It was good as well!

There's a similar thread regarding this topic on another "less civil" aviaition website. One of the posters is a former member of the squadron and stated that the AF1 commander is dual qualified but obviously operates the 747 more frequently. Therefore when flying the 757 as AF1 he has an instructor pilot in the right seat to as he put it say the proverbial "I wouldn't do that if I were you."
