Aircraft Crashes into DeLand Publix

Look at most of the airports in SOCAL that are not too far away from the coast, but far enough that they're not next to the ocean.

I bring this up because yesterday 4/2/12 an experimental twin engine airplane took off from Deland Municipal Airport (kded) in Florida and within two minutes of takeoff lost its engines or something (report has yet to come out) and landed smack in the middle of a Publix. If you were to see the distance between the two it may be a couple hundred feet from the airport to the Publix he crashed into. Things of this nature make me wonder should airports have more space between its surrounding area or something? Just something that I am curious about and wondered if I was the only one who sees it this way. Would like to know some other more experienced thoughts about airports and their surrounding areas.

Let me guess, your a freshman at Riddle and the ERAU soup of the day is that uncontrolled fields are dangerous?

And it wasn't a twin, but a Seawind 3000.
 
Deland is a death trap in general. At least it was 10-15 years ago, anyway. Every idiot student pilot in the state seemed to be in the pattern at any given time, all ignoring standard pattern entries and radio calls. I'm amazed that there aren't more midairs there.

That's not just Deland - try every airport without air carrier service in Florida.

ehhh.... There are some hotspots where there are some pilot mills (Ormond beach just north of daytona, Tamiami, just to name a few)

There are many unfrequented lovely uncontrolled airports in florida, it's a shame the bad ones overshadow the good ones

Not saying there are "bad" ones, but there's just lots of traffic around here

oh most definitely! I thought you were agreeing that all the uncontrolled airports were filled with idiot student pilots which is thankfully not the case, but there are some HUGE outliers that are very very dangerous to go to
 
We have the same issue with one of the local racetracks. It was built in 1957 when there was not a house in sight, but the neighbors who moved into new houses 10 years ago want it shut down. Should have thought about that before you moved in next to a racetrack. Same goes for airports.

I do go to ERAU, but I am a senior and they actually didn't say anything about this incident surprisingly. As for the uncontrolled fields being dangerous....Riddle students make Deland a death trap if anything. I don't blow that Riddle smoke of how lovely it is and all that nonsense. My peers screwed up uncontrolled airport entries every way possible just about. I'm just happy they learn from it and get better.

As for the incident, I am happy to see everyone walk out from that accident alive.
 
Caution wake turb: Find me an airport that is "uncontrolled?" Sounds like a security issue to me. Non-towered? Ah much better!

Cedar Key is one of my favorites! I have some good memories there.

Love that place! My first landing there was the first time I was landing in any runway short of 3000ft. It was a blast! I want to go back there, I loved flying in FL (In Brazil now)
