Aircraft Crashes into DeLand Publix

Hey guys, I am new to this forum and hopefully I put this in the right section. I've been flying for two years now and I see some uncontrolled airports that are in highly populated areas. I bring this up because yesterday 4/2/12 an experimental twin engine airplane took off from Deland Municipal Airport (kded) in Florida and within two minutes of takeoff lost its engines or something (report has yet to come out) and landed smack in the middle of a Publix. If you were to see the distance between the two it may be a couple hundred feet from the airport to the Publix he crashed into. Things of this nature make me wonder should airports have more space between its surrounding area or something? Just something that I am curious about and wondered if I was the only one who sees it this way. Would like to know some other more experienced thoughts about airports and their surrounding areas.
 
In a lot of cities, the airports were at one time outside of the city limits. As the cities grew and expanded, the land next to airports were developed due to cheaper property values.

Bingo.

Look at pictures of the airport from decades ago and I can almost guarantee you it was surrounded by fields.
 
kinda funny how airports put themselves out in the middle of no where, then cities expand and want to build high rises on final approaches, then the local neighbors start complaining it gets too loud....people let me tell you


although aopa did have a huge win a few years ago, can't remember where it took place but it went to court and the contractors had to tear down a few stories of their project because they knowingly built it too high (bonus points if someone can find the info about it)
 
go to Google Earth and take a look at T94 (Twin Oaks) in San Antonio. Houses are about 50 feet from runway and it is less than two miles from KSAT. Oh also, trees on both ends. I used to sit on my back porch and look at the pilot's faces as they went by.
 
It reminds me of another topic when subdivisions get built next to cow and pig farms then sue to get the farmer to stop raising live stock.

My home airport has been in a lawsuit for like 5 years now. when they expanded the runway the safety zone increased causing a couple of neighbors to lose tall trees. The people have been suing saying that the airport needs to buy their houses since they cant sell them now or some BS to that extent. only one who wins is the lawyers.
 
The Deland airport is really not a good example of this. The airport was there long before the development was and there is still plenty of wide open spaces to the north and east.

Total aside, the first place I thought of when I saw the thread title was Skagway, AK.
 
WOW! And what's weird is I knew that store looked familiar. Before I read the title and place I said that looks like the Publix at Daytona. 4yrs since then and I can still pick it out. Horrible news though wtf...

And CA isn't :D? What if I enjoy dodging Colombian drug smugglers in El Caminos and blue hairs in Buicks on I-95 every day? The 2 months I spent if FL were awesome.
