Air Force 2 muscles over a Cub

Negative, those VH-60 "White Hawks" belong to and are flown as Marine One as well. HMX -1 is the only Marine unit to have the H-60's to my knowledge.

I believe he means that if the President were riding on an Army UH-60 for whatever reason, then it'd be Army One. Don't know if that'd happen though.

Although, prior to 1976, it was all Army One........no Marine One.

The VH-60's are soley used by HMX-1.

Also a negative it was a shared duty prior to '76, with the Marines being the first to provide the service. In '76 the Marines were given sole responsibility of Presidential Helicopter Support.

(Easy way to prove this is look at the famous Nixon resignation picture and the helo in the background is a Marine VH-3A)

(I was stationed at MCAF Quantico for 4 years with HMX-1 and my father-in-law is a former White House Liaison Officer for HMX-1)

Hate to bust your bubble...but that was an Army helo and was in fact Army One. The pilot was Lt Col Gene Boyer.

after further research I find the army also had the VH-3A so the identity of the helo in the Nixon photo may not be as concrete as I thought. I was always told it was Marine but apparently it was an Army for that photo, but it was a shared duty prior to '76.

Actually we were both wrong and right. Reading some history on it, I came across this...

[FONT=verdana,geneva,arial][SIZE=-1]"Only two of these aircraft carried Army markings, and Army and Marine Corps crews operated whichever aircraft was available. In 1962 President Kennedy requested that the VIP aircraft have distinctive markings. The helicopters were to have a green and white paint scheme, with United States of America on both sides of the fuselage, and an American flag on both sides of the tail and engine cowling and the Presidential seal on both sides of the nose."

So, at that time, either the USMC or the Army would fly them. When Nixon left, it happened to be Boyer who was Army.

There...everyone has their history lesson for the evening!

A Yak. Fine
A Socata. Fine
A Diamond. Fine
An Extra 300. Fine
A Robin. Fine.

But a J-3 Cub? A CUB! The mainstay of the aviation culture? That is just Un American. Lets impeach this clown!

I think they shared at that point.

My H-1 on-wing instructor, Maj. Westling USMC, also flew President Nixon...

I remember seeing what I believe was this 757 doing touch and gos in CHO (Charlottesville VA, I hate using obscure airport identifiers). I always thought that was pretty cool.

Thank you so so much for listing the airport/city. I wish more people would do the same!

Not entirely true.

This only applies if they are being flown in/by Air Force equipment and personnel.

The helicopter you see land on the White House lawn is "Marine One" when the President is on board, and the VH-60s that travel with him abroad are "Army One" under the same conditions.

When first lady Clinton traveled to Iraq, the Army pilots that flew her were reprimanded for making up and using the call sign "Broomstick One". You have to appreciate the nuts it took to do that!

:rotfl:

I had always thought it was Marine One too, until I was at the Army Aviation museum at Fort Rucker and saw their VIP Presidential UH-34 there.

Also, my IP for UH-1s at Rucker was a 70 year old former Warrant, who flew Army One for Nixon. Was talking to him once in the air about some incident I had had in my career where I thought I could get in big trouble. His answer was "son, trust me, if one can taxi the Presidential helicopter into the side of a hangar and still keep their wings, then there's no situation you could've run into where you were in danger of that."

:D

Not trying to make any political statement about anyone, but isn't this the third incident with Biden's traveling adventures? Seems like his motorcade has been involved in two accidents just after dropping him off? I may have the details wrong. I just got off a 13 hr duty day :D

Saw Biden land in PHX a few months ago in one of the C-32's. I've always loved the 757, and in the Blue and White scheme for the Presidential Airlift it looks even better.

I saw "Nighthawk", aka marine one when the President is on board, a few times at KFDK when Bush was in office. Camp David is a few miles north and they drop him off and then land there.

He came straight in usually and landed similar to a fixed-wing airplane using the full length of the runway, but hovering. Pretty wild how accurate the pilot's are. If anyone has seen the Discovery show on HMX-1, "On Board Marine One", I highly recommend it. It was interesting how they pack everything up in C-5s and go around the world with the President. They were there when GWB went to Iraq for the first time and it looked pretty intense. They had some unusual security procedures, such as steep turning departures.

The 747s I've seen many times, used to live right next to Andrews AFB. I've also seen them doing pattern work at PAX River. One word - shiny.

The VH-60s are also Marine One when the president is on board. Both the VH-3s and VH-60s belong to HMX-1.

The Army did fly the president around in the VH-3 up until sometime in the 70s when they handed over the mission to the Marines.

Uh...jumped to the end, did you? This was covered pretty extensively in the previous threads. There will be a test later too folks.

Oh...I miss Bill Clinton. That guy went on some AWESOME trips and I got a lot of pins in my world travels map thanks to him! :D

Yup, I replied without reading the rest of the thread.

I got to land in Crawford when we rehearsed the first lift out to Dubya's ranch. That was pretty cool.
