ADIZ Frustrations

Anyone fed up with the ADIZ procedures?

I flew into TEB [Teterborough] last week to pick up a passenger, and then telephone-filed IFR to JYO [Leesburg], knowing DUATS isn't possible. I stayed IFR and squawking code all the way to the ground, despite Potomac Approaches' implied wish I would cancel IFR in the air- I've read that would be a mistake. On the ground at JYO, I tried both FSS freqs, both Clearance Delivery freqs, and the GCO- all to no avail. I taxied off, shut down, and was all set to run to a wireline phone, but the line guy offered to do so for me. I tipped him $10. I didnt want to use my cell phone, which is on a national plan and always seems to connect to IKK [Kankakee] for FSS.

We enjoyed the new Air Museum at Dulles.

Upon leaving JYO, we were able to raise Potomac Approach on 118.55, Clnc Del, to get our discreet squawk and open our IFR plan. We were given a clearance only after Approach confirmed we would be able to depart RWY 17 and make an immediate right turn within a mile of departing JYO. We assured approach we could comply, but there were several in the pattern, and then they held us for another coupla minutes while an IFR Bonanza landed. They cleared us again, and then sent us to STILES, Right Back Up The Approach into Rwy 17! Crazy, if anyone else was trying to get into JYO on the localizer before the front passed over.

My frustration with the communications to begin or end a flight, plus the unusual departure procedure, also doesn't make me feel any safer from terrorists. Is some one else safer? Who knows? I know we flew past P40, but really, who is getting protection here?

Whew - rant over now.

Why would it be a mistake? We do it every time we fly into the ADIZ. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif You just keep your code and land.

I fly ifr out of JYO all the time....the immediate right turn isnt for seperation of terrorists but rather for seperation from departure and arrival traffic on 19r/1L at dulles. If you notice you are only about 6 miles from Dulles straight line. The localizer is the only approach in use in there, and still is the standard fix for departures. Anyone departing ifr in vmc shoudl see and avoid anyhow, and anyone in imc will get seperation since there shouldnt be any vfr traffic. it doesnt bother me too much. The guys at potomac do a good job. you couldve just ran into the fss station there on the field instead of racing to a phone. Leesburg fss is connected to the new terminal building. I can see your reason for frustration, but consider teh alternatives. on my comemrcial checkride she drilled me on intercept procedures and there is something in our airplanes checkout binder on them. its a fact of life living around here......glad you got to enjoy the museum. did you go in the tower and watch teh iad traffic?

You can cancel IFR if you want. You just need to maintain your squawk until you land.

I fly in and out of the Balt-Wash ADIZ quite often and haven't had a problem to date. I don't do the IFR thing yet, but they've always been accomodating when I'm in their airspace . . . even outside the ADIZ Pot Approach has been great with granting me 'Flight Following' everytime I ask.

I'm sure to many it has been an inconvenience . . . just roll with the punches /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

Also, you can cancel you flight plan with any FSS. My old cell provider always connected me to St. Pete and I was able to cancel on the ground through them at several airports in the midwest. Sometimes they would give me a hard time, but after I explained my situation they were helpful.
