Anyone fed up with the ADIZ procedures?
I flew into TEB [Teterborough] last week to pick up a passenger, and then telephone-filed IFR to JYO [Leesburg], knowing DUATS isn't possible. I stayed IFR and squawking code all the way to the ground, despite Potomac Approaches' implied wish I would cancel IFR in the air- I've read that would be a mistake. On the ground at JYO, I tried both FSS freqs, both Clearance Delivery freqs, and the GCO- all to no avail. I taxied off, shut down, and was all set to run to a wireline phone, but the line guy offered to do so for me. I tipped him $10. I didnt want to use my cell phone, which is on a national plan and always seems to connect to IKK [Kankakee] for FSS.
We enjoyed the new Air Museum at Dulles.
Upon leaving JYO, we were able to raise Potomac Approach on 118.55, Clnc Del, to get our discreet squawk and open our IFR plan. We were given a clearance only after Approach confirmed we would be able to depart RWY 17 and make an immediate right turn within a mile of departing JYO. We assured approach we could comply, but there were several in the pattern, and then they held us for another coupla minutes while an IFR Bonanza landed. They cleared us again, and then sent us to STILES, Right Back Up The Approach into Rwy 17! Crazy, if anyone else was trying to get into JYO on the localizer before the front passed over.
My frustration with the communications to begin or end a flight, plus the unusual departure procedure, also doesn't make me feel any safer from terrorists. Is some one else safer? Who knows? I know we flew past P40, but really, who is getting protection here?
Whew - rant over now.
