ACARS online

I would not worry at all about the position issue. It's the following.

Us to MOC: We have a spoileron fault status msg

MOC reply: Don't worry about it. When you get on the ground cycle 2P8/3N8/1S3 and let us know if that works. (These are not the actual breakers fwiw).

Someone in the general public: OMG I need to call the news- these people are flying around with safety in question and don't care!

I think we understand your point, we just think it's pointless. All of this information is available for a small fee, and if your employer can not figure out how to keep it private, then maybe you should find a better place to work...

I'm pretty sure that he has a job that helps keep us all (U.S. citizens at least) free. US Gov is my guess, though I can't be too sure which branch.

You are probably right about his employer, and I'm sure they aren't that worried about the position of their charter aircraft.

Don't want something read? Don't broadcast it on a VHF frequency.

Or, if there's no other reasonable option then, if you don't want something read, encrypt it.

The military can encrypt. The CRJ CCCANNN ONNLLYY DOOO ITT THIIISSS WAY. CRJ drivers know what I am talking about! Things happen during a flight that pertain directly to the safe operation of the flight- hence the reason for flight following from a dispatcher. Problem is the last thing I want to deal with is media attention and even more paperwork second guessing the crew's actions for safely operating from point A-B because some private pilot was intercepting our ACARS messages and called it in to a news station saying "Hey I am a pilot and this is news". Its a far cry from something that would happen often but is not to much of a stretch in our world. Just my concern.

If I've got a problem that is a) serious enough to ACARS to dispatch and b) serious enough that somebody is going to pull it off VHF and then call a news station, that is going to be the least of my worries until I am on the ground with the brake set and the people safely off the plane.

That's weird. I'm as geeky as the next guy but I doubt if I'd find myself excitedly looking over position reports on ACARS.

Haven't you guys discovered porn yet? :)

Actually on my part there is a little fear...I am on an airplane that weighs almost 800,000 pounds and carries enough fuel to run my truck for YEARS...and I have seen one hit by a missile. Thank God it only took out an engine, but I really don't want to try my chances.

Why don't you try DHL? They are the only carrier I know of that had a heavy hit by a SAM which took out an engine while climbing out of Bahgdad. Isn't the internet great? Thanks Al Gore!

Nope, they're not the only one. Keep reading...

If you are going down the TWA 800 road, stop right there. However, from the following list of incidents, I can only see one that would be doing work that would be construed as involving National Security as was stated in the original post.
