ACARS online

I don't know if I am a fan of the ACARS being viewable by everyone online. I look at ACARS as company communication. Kinda like internal memos- they are kept "in house" for a reason.

Holy crap...that's kinda disturbing the info you can dig up on there. Especially from my company!!!

So why is everything so secret now? The only thing preventing anyone from knowing this is money. What don't you like about people seeing where your aircraft is?

Ever hear of terrorism? How about surface to air missiles? For my employer, it's about national security.

Oh come now, perhaps now we should make the locations of airports secret because we all know airplanes go there? :banghead:

I was looking through the ACARS trying to find the message "please tell the guy in your jumpseat to call crew tracking, kthx."

Are you serious? If somebody's gonna shoot you with a surface to air missle, they'll probably use their radar site to pinpoint you and then start lobbing missiles at you, not use ACARS messages.

You've gotta consider that your employer has thought about this one.

Your employer must be an idiot then. By the time the ACARS sends the msg that the plane is at position xxxyyy, they plane is quite a bit past that. I wish people would stop using "national security" when they mean "fear" or "downright stupidity".

Damn Gina...talk about testy!!!

About being past the reported point, that is true. However, I am all about operation security, and this is another tool that can be used to further ones causes.

It is not "fear" or "stupidity", it is called doing all you can to not give them information can be used against us. It's hard enough when you have the press running around reporting information that is considered classified. Actually on my part there is a little fear...I am on an airplane that weighs almost 800,000 pounds and carries enough fuel to run my truck for YEARS...and I have seen one hit by a missile. Thank God it only took out an engine, but I really don't want to try my chances.

It isn't the point of some dude sitting on a ridge line with a SAM and his Wi-Fi connection looking for position reports for his next attack. It is the wealth of information that is available can be used in strategic planning of attacks. I am not going to argue with anyone about this...I don't think it is a good idea, and my employer tends to think about things after the fact. Look at who our boss is.

As far as the position report reason why this shouldn't be online, don't forget about flight view and flight aware. I haven't checked out the ACARS thing yet but flight view will give you an altitude and groundspeed as well as a real time graphical position. Oh and a fairly accurate ETA.

That flightaware data is delayed about 5 to 10 minutes. You CAN get real time data, but it's a bit harder to come by.

On a side note....Speed Pilot...that avatar is disturbing...:)

I guess I am not really getting my point across here. The disadvantages to online posting.

I think we understand your point, we just think it's pointless. All of this information is available for a small fee, and if your employer can not figure out how to keep it private, then maybe you should find a better place to work...
