Re: Video

I wonder what the spool time from reverse deployment on a 757/767 would be... I figure if you were at max reverse the engine should be pretty decently spooled already. If not, attempting a T&G might make the next 30 seconds some of the longest in your life.

The reverse levers are separate from the standard thrust levers. You'd have to spool down the reverse, push the reverse levers down, allow the reverser itself to stow, then spool the engines up again using the normal thrust levers. Maybe there's a cool trick I haven't learned that some of these experienced guys can share, though. ;)

By the way, I'm really enjoying this thread. It's helping me keep my head in the books during this long IOE wait.

Re: Video

I agree, great discussion on this thread. Also makes me glad, once again, that guys like seagull and A300 still hang out here.

Re: Video

So back to the original mishap...do any of the 121 guys discuss/practice (during initial or recurrent training) the possibility of going around while on the ground (I guess more of a touch and go?). I know they were screaming down the runway and with time compression issues/trying to figure out what's wrong/short runway etc. so there wasn't any real time to "discuss" this, but is it EVER discussed?

Oh sure! "Rejected landings" were a recurring issue during CQ training, especially in mountainous terrain where you have to know whether to fly the missed approach or the obstacle departure procedure or whatever it's called -- on my days off my brain goes to mush.

I guess I am accustomed to doing T/G's in a big 'ole plane on usually long runways, but there is often a bunch of time to make a go/no go decision on the ground. I would think the 757 is overpowered enough that even with spool up time, they could have pushed the throttles up and "gone around". Just curious...

No such thing as an overpowered airplane! The 757 has lots of power and will whip the snot out of an "OMG OMG TT? ME? Junior base?!" Canadair, but I'd hate to call it "overpowered" :)

Re: Video

Would icing be causal in the US F-28 accident at LGA?

The F-28 doesn't have LED's and It's wing is more critical and more vulnerable to wing contamination from ice. Therefore, current icing conditions may have played a role in the USAir accident in LGA.

Exactly. I specified swept wing transport WITH LEDs!

Re: Video

common type. (bs if you ask me.. the 400 is nothing like a 200, display, instument or operationally)

We have plenty of bleed air, we already have 1 always on bleed source. Engines are derated by nearly 2000hp, and we are allowed bleeds on depts.. so I am pretty sure the Q "could" do it.

Thanks, just had that recollection and threw it out there, really, not trying to be argumentative, was really just curious. Thanks for the clarification, interesting thread even for us light single guys....:)

Re: Video

It would be nice if there was a definitive view of the spoilers, if they don't come up, it's not stopping. Not on that runway anyway.

TR's aren't figured in the landing distance calculations, but spoilers are. Have to get the weight on the wheels, even with autobrakes 3.

*edit*

All right, I didn't see TallFlyers pics before I posted. They obviously aren't up in the pic, but if they were, the crew probably stowed them after stopping in case of an evac.

It will be interesting to read the report and see if they ever did deploy.

Re: Video

I never saw the spoilers up when it went off the runway or as it was hauling ass down the last third of the runway. The rumor from MX is the T/R and Spoilers didn't properly deploy or deploy on time. The plane left the other morning back to Tulsa or DFW from J-Hole.

Doesn't look like they deployed. The panels closest to the aileron appear to remain down in the video.

Here's another video with a similar viewpoint. Seems like you should be able to see the speedbrakes deploy in the JAC video:

Re: Video

Those houses across the bay would be an awesome place to live! And was that a Cape Air 402 on the other runway?

Sure looks like one....I don't think there are too many 402-looking blue tailed non-Cape Air planes hanging around Logan :p
