A year in the life of a ASA/Xjet new hire

I don't know where jtrain is getting his numbers from but they are no where near to being accurate. 200 on base ? . There is double that . There are 400 FO's at ORD. 150-160 lines? It is more like 280. To answer your question surreal, I am about 70 from the bottom and have about 60 people in front of me before I see a hard line.

Why do you guys think they are hiring so many if these numbers are the current situation?

I cant answer that for sure. I would say it has something to do with the ATP rule coming into effect this year and retirements in the majors that are about to hit towards the end of this year. It looks like a DEN base will be opening sometime in-between this spring and the summer. Which is going to get rid of alot of west coast people in ORD.

The ERJ operation, as jtrain will I'm sure elaborate on, was chronically understaffed coming out of the global recession say the summer of 2010, and remained so through much of 2011. From what I understand, continued hiring is really to better staff that side plus - potentially - allow for enough bodies company wide (re: CRJ positions) in the future following a JCBA and SLI for folks hired after a certain date (for example, 4 Aug 2010).

Everything after potentially is my own belief and in no way reflects any sort of negotiating position or position of any merger committee work that hasn't even occurred yet.

5 year upgrade? Awesome! I better get that ATP written done. Wait, nevermind. I'm on the Expressjet side that is moving backwards as we are left to rot while management plays with their new toy.

Are you guys getting passed on for upgrades by 2010 new hires as well?

It's awesome to have a discussion with a 2010 new hire talk about upgrading..

Eh, seniority, who needs it.

Thank you, Bloch.

Sorry, responded about Newark, not Chicago. My mistake.

I'm a 2007 hire and I'm currently at least 500 away from upgrade, which will likely be 2 years from now.

So what is that? A 7 year upgrade with a solid 2.5 year furlough thrown in for good measure?

Sweetness.

Can I go rack up $50,000+ in debt to be in your shoes? Please?

I can't be all down. Without flight school and the resulting CFI rating I would have never met the man who is helping me get out of the 121 black hole. ;)

Is it really going to be a black hole for that long though? From some of the threads I have read here there is a lot of controversy on a "hiring surge coming" and whether it is a false hope or light at the end of the tunnel for guys looking at a 7+ year upgrade. I feel sort of lost in all these "abandon all hope ye who enter here" posts I've seen.

I've been hearing about the surge since I've been flying, so for 13 years..

It's not just a matter of will people get hired.. There will be jobs.. The question is, can the industry turn itself around so as to make the career worth doing again.

I'm going on 5 years as an FO at my current airline. To upgrade and hold my current base is a pipe dream and I refuse to commute. Not a pretty picture.

Why is everyone on the CRJ side getting all worked up about ERJ side getting 5 planes? I mean they got 20 or 30 planes I could understand and animosity. After SLI it all won't matter anyway(whenever that happens). But I did hear the recent meeting in Houston went well between all 3 parties

It's not about the ERJ side getting 5 more airplanes and getting 14 extended. I think it's the fact that we on the CRJ side are displacing, downgrading CAs and parking airplanes. We haven't had any good news on the CRJ side in a long time, which is probably also why there are so many ridiculous rumors flying around, because no "real" information has come from the company in the last year or so, besides the merger and SOC crap. CT's last Jetsream updates was a bit a slap in the face I thought... "We are parking CRJs, displacing and downgrading, but hey, the good news is on the ERJ side we are hiring like mad, upgrading and getting more planes". I sure wish ALPA would allow current CRJ pilots go to the ERJ side just to avoid more displacements and training costs. As long as the company has money for ridiculous events like Aceypalooza and crap like that, we must be doing ok. <sarcasm>

I can confirm they were giving 200% to captains that would pick trips up on days off. i think in September they started doing it for first officers as well.

Red flag isn't up, and 200% red flag sure as heck isn't up. Where'd you hear that from? Some captains making deals with scheduling? I haven't seen 200% reg flag since the summer.

As CRJflyer pointed out, its not that XJT is getting 5 more planes. That's good. Its that while they are growing and hiring like crazy, we're shrinking.

Some of those (stupidly) got into this to actually make a living instead of just to impress our friends on Facebook. $35k might be enough to live comfortably with 6 roommates. But some of us are trying to do adult things like buy a house, settle down, possibly have some kids. To responsibly do these things, we gotta have some movement. Or at least not be shrinking.

Yes, things MIGHT be all hunky dory after SLI. But realistically that isn't going to be happening for a few years. And who is to say we might not get completely shafted in the deal?
