A rant about my fellow airline passengers

Well, had to take good 'ol Delta from ATL to CLE...yeehaa, and I just gotta get this out, before I lose anymore of my mind.

Here goes...

It's called "Kiss and Fly", which means you drive in, pull into the CLEARLY labled drop off area, get out, get your gear, and leave. Why is it that people think it's called the-pull-into-the-thru-lanes-pay-no-attention-to-the-signs-and-take-an-hour-to-say-goodbye lane?

Next we have the joy of the Delta self-check-in kiosks. Note to the genius at Delta who thought ATL only needed like 30 Kiosks in the whole airport: That's not enough moron. I was in line forever and a day behind like 20 people trying to get to one of the "many" kiosks. Of course it never fails that I end up behind the guy who can't seem to figure out A) how a touch screen works, and B) can't decide where he wants to sit. Look moron, you got 3 real choices, First Class, front of coach, or back of coach. Why did it take him 5 minutes to decide that he already had a good seat.

Okay people, there is a traffic flow around the ticketing areas. You stay to the right and keep moving until you find your airline, x-ray machine, or entrance to the security area. YOU DO NOT STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I was trying to get to security and at least 5 people stopped dead in their tracks, and then get pissed off when I bump into them.

New flash people, they have those luggage sizers for a reason! Why is it that the last 4 people to board always seem to be trying to bring roller bags the size of a large Caddilac on board? And why are they always shocked when there's no room for their bag? And if you really need all that stuff, you should consider hiring a truck and moving there. Check your freakin' bags if they're you could fit a large horse in them.
banghead.gif

Why is it that I either get stuck next to or in front of the idiot passengers who think they know everything about flying? And why do they need to give a running commentary about the flight. Look, we're not delayed getting back into Atlanta, because there isn't enough space in the air around the airport, the landing gear doesn't come down 100 miles from the airport, it's not -100° F (heard this two weeks ago) at 33,000 feet, the pilot isn't too young to fly the plane, and we're not lost just because you can't find your house on the ground.
banghead.gif

And just to cover the rest of the bases...

Turn your cell phone off, when the FA tells you to, put your seat up before take off and landing, if you need to take a leak then go, but don't announce it to the ENTIRE FREAKIN' PLANE, and if you're pissed about the government spending millions to bail out the airlines, stop voting republican...and stop flying to dumbass.

Alright, I feel better.

Later.

BTW, hey Doug you makin' any runs from CLE -> ATL this week?

I see another happy Delta customer. And what brings you to CLE anyway? You could of come to CAK instead, and had TSA to deal with when you leave!

It seems to only get worse on the commerical flights I have taken lately. They really need to raise prices to stop some of the travelers. Making money by volume is not going to get it!

That is why the lounges are so good - it lets you get away from the riff-raff. If Delta pax are that bad, imagine how it would be on SWA - I hate to think!

Whenever I start to feel sorry for myself about being furloughed I read a post like this.

Then I don't feel so bad anymore. In fact, that's when I look at my kidsi and I'm pretty darned happy to be where I am.

Actually, it's losing money by volume.

My thing is this -- if you lose ten percent of your pax by raising fares by ten percent, to a level where you can (gasp) make money, well, you probably get rid of the Air Greyhound people. And you'll still have a high 60s/low 70s load factor.

I'd gladly pay an extra $50 to get rid of the Air Greyhound types.

Seriously! Does anyone else remember when people used to get dressed up to fly? I do...and I thought it was kinda cool, something special. Maybe thats a dated thing to say.

I used to get dressed up to go flying! I'd wear a lovely blue polyester suit paired with a white shirt with a cadillac emblem at the neck, coupled with an uncomfortable pair of navy blue heels!

What's up with people getting dressed up in polyester to go flying?

<queer eye voice on>
Natural fabrics, people! Natural fabrics!
<queer eye voice off>

There's a joke in here about airline management being stuck in the 70s and thus their uniform choices reflecting it, but someone else will have to make it.

Does anyone remember having to dress for non-rev travel (stand-by)????? I remember having to have a 2 piece, if not 3 piece to fly standby UAL, unless HNL in/out then Aloha shirt was fine, but they really hated you on the ORD-DTW flights. What are the dress requirements now for non-rev?

Work brings me to CLE, glorious work. Ah, well pays the bill, and hey free trip...even if it is to Cleveland.

Actually I usually fly Continental, which out of ATL is a joy...since no one flies them out of ATL.

I ended up on Delta since this was a codeshare (I think that's right) flight for Continental.

I don't mind CAK at all, actually I like it better than Cleveland, security has always been faster for me. I can deal with the TSA when it's only 4 of them, instead of 40. I also love it when AirTran runs their $39 upgrade promos. I usually take advantage of that, because first class nowadays (at least on a U.S. airline) is worth about that. Not $75 like Delta charges.

Oh please.

Do not get me started on that, yes I do remember, and the most dressed down I'll get for a flight is a nice pair of jeans, casual shoes (no sneakers), and either a nice golf shirt or a button down. I'll not do shorts or sandles when I fly. It's a respect thing. Respect for myself and respect for the pilot and FA's who dress appropriately. I mean if you weren't expected to dress nicely, then the pilots would be wearing jeans, a company polo, nikes, and a ball cap. God help us if we ever get to that lever.

Hell, I make an effort to look presentable for a flight lesson. Respect.

Of course the TSA doesn't really make people want to be dressed up. I actually think my next trip I'm going to make in hospital scrubs and go commando.

Geez, and the TSA at ATL today was in a mood. My god, I've never felt more like a cow than today. They might as well been screaming, "Come on bessie, get a move on. Yeehaa!".

Oh, and I've had the "joy" of flying SWA. I never felt like I was in a cattle car, I actually like the open seating idea, but the trash I was flying with. Ugh, never again. Snobby, perhaps, but then again I guess I expect people had decent parentage and know how to conduct themselves in public.

Hmmm, polyester for flight crews...

Yeah great idea. Let's put people in an environment that truly could burst into flames, and make them wear a fabric that will melt onto their skin.

BRILLIANT!

Hmmm, Air Greyhound...

You might be onto something Tony.

That's a concept that I could get behind.

Air Greyhound, my friend.

Check this out. Pricing for UAL (you know, one of those high priced legacy carriers) to go from IAD to SAN over the Labor Day weekend? $308, nonstop. With a different schedule, the cost would be $248.

Greyhound? $218 with a seven day advanced purchase, and $364 without one.

So, UAL is $90 more expensive, but it takes five hours versus 63 hours.

Hell, man. I'd pay the $364 if UAL wanted it.

Especially if it drove the Air Greyhound types to Greyhound.

And I hate polyester. I don't know why so many uniforms are made out of it. Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck.

It's not just the airlines. The entire country is going down the drain. It's absolutely sick.

I mean look at pilots nowadays! They don't respect the uniform they wear as an operating crewmember, not to mention their actions. Then they rag on those who do still have respect for the uniform, calling them "uncool." This goes for many other professions as well.

Sad, sad days we live in.

Some of you guys are a little too uptight. There's nothing wrong with wearing shorts or sandals on an airline flight. I'll be flying Delta tommorrow and I will be wearing shorts and sandals, not because I don't have respect for the pilot, but because it's 95 degrees outside and I would pass out from heat exaustion if I had to wear a suit. I also don't get the uniforms. I wouldn't have any problem with pilots wearing everyday clothes in the cockpit. Maybe it's just because I'm younger, but I don't think the way you dress is all that important.

I do agree with you on the "Air Greyhound" types, tho, and the annoying "know-it-all of flying" pax who probably don't have a single hour in the logbook.

and post regularly on airliners.net ;-)

I flew SWA all the time when I was in the Navy, and I've never had a problem with them or fellow passengers like you see on Airline. They seemed to always have the best prices even taking into consideration the other majors' military discounts. They were and still are the first airline I check for tickets. Maybe I'm lucky, but I've never gotten the sense of a trailer park emptying out on a SWA flight.
