A predicament: what would you do?

KEEP the flight instruction job, and find another job other than Starbucks....alla dounkin, there are always other places than the particular Starbucks that you can get into. Some may pay better and be flexible. Just be open to yourself about limitations and you will be free

I agree... or just go across the street and apply at the next starbucks. :)

Well my sbux manager wanted to know today so I was forced to quit. It was quite the bitter pill to swallow/sickening feeling... just about the only thing more sickening than losing your flying job, finding another one + a second job, thinking you have it all figured it out, and then 2 weeks later being painted into a very very narrow corner. All this and I've only been out of college 4 or 5 months. How come no one warns you about how difficult this living life thing can be?

Consider yourself warned... but seriously good luck on the next gig.

As the another posted said if they want you there they should pay you minimum wage to be there. Cut grass, paint, etc. Personally I would stick with the second job also though. I know things are rough but you can look around and eventually find a job that gives you enough flexibility. If you were a little closer to elyria I could possibly give you a job in the warehouse working late hours but that would be a good hour drive from where you are now. I only recommend the second job because its really nice while CFIing to know you have a steady paycheck coming in plus whatever you make flight instructing. That being said as you know winter around here is pretty dead unless your at a university. As you might know I fly out of Skypark and we are extremely busy in summer with something like 30 students getting a rating this summer and plenty still in training but come that first major snow those planes sit in the ground till April when ground school is over except for few and far between instrument students. The key in Ohio is make enough during the good weather months to make it through the long winters. If you ever want to fly though just hit me I got a Cherokee we can go bust some holes in the sky with.

Plan A) Do as my nephew did- he contacted Merry Maids and became an independant contractor cleaning offices in the evenings and weekends.
Plan B) Dunkin Donuts

Got some friends that do Plan A...clean offices in the evening. Couple of hours a night, not hard work at all, not a dream job but it's money.

I've explained the situation to her twice, and it seems that she won't work with me on the mornings. I myself am shocked that its not a more flexible gig.
I didn't take time to read the entire thread, so this might have already been mentioned, but if Starbucks isn't willing to work with your schedule to hell with them. It's not like she's offering you the VP of Marketing position that comes with full benefits, company car, use of the corporate jet, plus $150K/year. This is a minimum wage job, period!

With that said, I know Ohio, I left there a year ago, I know what the job market is like, so you almost have to take what you can get right now, and put up with the BS. But my advice, especially if you're going to CFI through the winter, keep looking for another job that will be more flexible, so when you do get a "far & few between" student, you won't have this problem. I know someone here mentioned delivering pizzas in the evening. If you can find a job doing that, I know they sometimes pay twice what you would make working at Starbucks, and it would be flexible.

It's sad to see some of the aviation companies that take advantage of pilots, but it's even worse to see these minimum wage butt holes act like they're doing you the favor by hiring you in this down economy. (which, technically, I guess it is a favor these days...:()

EDIT: BTW, what's going to mean more in the next couple years, that glowing recommendation from your Starbucks manager, or one from your CFI job? Aviation is a small community, don't burn your bridges with this guy.
