A flight mistake with flaps

If an airplane is gliding 5 feet above the ground with full flaps extended, retracting the flaps will probably cause the airplane to sink in to the ground, .

Doesn't have to....it's a fun exercise to pop the flap lever up while in ground effect. A steady increase in AoA will keep you a foot above the runway as the flaps retract. It's a great demonstration that AoA and flap position are completely interchangeable, as long as you're above the clean stall speed. Your glide ratio will always be improved, although the closer to the ground you are, the better your technique needs to be.

Ditto. I thought most of us were learning to do this with the Power-Off 180 touching down on a spot. Playing the flaps to arrive at the exact spot.
Can be done with the electric flaps also, though not as precise.

...40 degrees makes for one heck of an air brake :)

I was flying an Alarus CH2000 with a student when the flaps malfunctioned on an actual ILS approach. The student put the lever to half and it just kept on going to full landing position and wouldn't come back up! The flaps on an Alarus are split and like barn doors when full down. We almost had to firewall the throttle to stay on the glideslope!:D

Guess I'm probably in the minority.. but I HATE seeing guys doing long base/finals in singles.... it's always low, slow, dragging it in...

Try being the military controller who opted to do a par radar approach on a 172. If I remember correctly, the controller has to speak every 5 seconds or the flight goes lost com. The controller goes through a bottle of water.

As for me, I snagged an arresting cable with a warrior at an AFB in Europe. Shut the airfield down for 15 minutes plus got the preverbial - contact the tower after you park.
