A/C Down at Hayward Exec (Oakland)

Re: King Air down in CA

(09-16) 14:32 PDT HAYWARD -- The pilot of a small plane that crashed soon after taking off from Hayward Executive Airport on Wednesday walked away from the wreckage uninjured, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

The twin-engine Beechcraft King Air plane crashed at 12:25 p.m., and caught fire, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said. The plane was bound for San Carlos, he said.

The pilot, whose name has not been released, climbed out of the wreckage unaided, Gregor said. He was the only person onboard.

The plane came to rest atop railroad tracks near a warehouse complex off Corsair Boulevard, just west of the airport runway and south of Skywest Golf Course. It appeared to be largely intact, but the fuselage was charred.

FAA investigators arrived on the scene about 2 p.m. to begin an investigation into why the plane crashed. The National Transportation Safety Board will join the investigation.

The plane is owned by Henry Broadcasting Nevada Inc., which has a San Francisco address, public records show. Representatives could not immediately be reached.

I just flew over Hayward about an hour ago to check it out. The fuselage is all in once piece but burnt to a crisp, and almost all the grass along the last 1/3 of the runway is burnt too from the fire. No idea where the remains of the wings are, maybe they were picked up already. By nightfall the plane is supposed to be on its way up to a scrapyard in Sacramento. I guess a lot of people have been transitioning to check out the plane, when I was overhead having made no mention of the crash the tower said "When you're done looking at the Kingair, go ahead and turn towards the Toll Plaza and contact SQL tower".

Did that guy retire? If we're thinking of the same guy I think he was there a few months ago when I last flew into Hayward. When he did the ATIS it was pretty funny the times I heard it.
