That was a picture of a whip scorpion. We get them occasionally. They look sinister as hell, and they're fast, but they're harmless to humans apart from making one paranoid when you walk into a dark garage and pop the light on!

A "whip scorpion" is another name for a vinegaroon. I dig dead ones out of my pool several times a summer. You're right. Totally harmless, but they're more closely related to standard spiders than to true scorpions (although scorpions are an arachnid subset).
