5 minute clearance void time

Anyone ever got a clearance like this? I called FSS, who gave me another number, who gave me another number to call, as I couldn't reach ATC on the ground. It was a standard clearance, but the clearance void time was only 5 minutes. I guess they were busy?

Maybe an IFR on the way was getting close to being inbound?
I had them give that excuse for not giving me my clearance. We called literally 45 minutes later (after being told to wait an hour) and got our clearance. As we were getting turned on course by center, we heard the other guy inbound. W.T.F. PEOPLE!!!

Sometimes its just kind of haphazard.

In my experience 5 to 10 minute void times is not unusual. We usually don't call until we're taxiing out for take-off, within a minute or two of when we know we'll be ready.

... (after being told to wait an hour)...

Wait an hour? For an inbound??? I suspect a misunderstanding because I've never heard of such a thing. What airport was this at?

Definitely don't call for your clearance until you're ready to go. Startup, taxi, runup et al.

Had it happen today. "void @ 2036, time is now 2032." had to pick it up over the phone, couldnt get center on the ground. Taxied to the runup, shut it down so i could hear the guy on the phone, then had to quick startup, runup and get out of there. I should have just asked for more time

*shrug* I thought it was weird as well. It was at KSLR, in actual, on my first cross country as a CFII. I'm sure there was SOMETHING going on behind the scenes, but I have no idea what.

Best guess, you heard a different inbound then what they held you for, though haveing you call back an hour later is a bit weird...

I always would tell my students to not accept a 5 minute void time if getting the clearance over the phone. If its via radio, and youre ready its OK, but over the phone I think its too much of a rush... especially if you get something you didnt file and have to dig out the charts.

clearance void time was only 5 minutes.

You can sometimes get a release time and a void time....release in 15 minutes, void 5 minutes after that. Some FSS people don't understand what that is, though. I normally call MEM approach on the telephone, rather than FSS.

i have recieved a "clearance void if not off the ground in 2 minutes" twice at KBRD.

Yea it happens. One that I can remember was a short flight to IAD. We called for push, no delays before but the tower said they issued a ground stop and that it would be about another an hour. Naturally we had some pissed customers, we opened the door etc. It was lunch, I decided to go on a food run for the CA and the FA with MY MONEY(later on that). Went up with the rampers to the small food court on the second floor. While waiting for the food some old lady came up to me and said are you the pilot of that flight, yes I said. She said my son is going to London. It turned out that with the delay it would be a tight connecton. Well while waiting for this particularly slow restaurant, I get another notice from the passengers to look outisde. I look outside and it was the ramper waving to me to get down to the airplane right now. I was then faced with the dilema of keeping the CA, myself, and the FA hungry or make sure that lady's son got to London on time. I got what what little money I could get back with no food and I ran down to the ramp. Got to the airplane and I litteraly dove into the cockpit. It turned out that they gave us like a 5 minute window to depart. We made it within a few seconds.

See Talia, aren't i just amazing?

indeed you are.

i cancelled ifr on the way in, and prob could have got out and picked it up in the air, but wanted to pick it up before i left. called center, they transferred me to another guy who had me use a handheld to try to pick it up over a bunch of different unpublished frequencies, and only gave me my clearance over the phone after we tried that. (glad i shut down and didnt burn out the hobbs) Then he gave me 4 minutes. ugh.
